IF YOU LOVE THE UC's, SO DO I.. BUT..

the UC's are great.. Berkeley and LA are THE giants among all the UC schools but the other UC's are fantastic too; and i do recognize the honor and prestige tied with attending such universities but why do they admit so little (and i mean, SUPER little) applicants from outside california? i really envy those people who go to the UC's. i personally have been aiming for the UC's but i know my chances are slim because im from illinois and i just go to a community college.. can someone evaluate my stats and tell me if i stand a chance for getting into any UC's. thanks so much.
here's my stats:
45 credits completed (upon applying)
3.96 gpa
16 credits in progress
njcaa tennis varsity
4 year ncaa volleyball player
dean's and president's lister
phi theta kappa honor society member
did lots of community service stuff: enrichment program for the blind, habitat for humanity volunteer, special education volunteer teacher, taught impoverished children somewhere in the philippines
voted vice president and public relations officer of the class all through high school
national debate member
kiwanis club
yamaha music masters circle (piano)
*as for my recommendation letters and essay, i dont think ill run into any trouble with those.
i will be applying to universities soon but i need confirmation from some helpful fellows here before i send an application to the UC's.. thanks.

the UCs receive support from California taxpayers, so they give preference to in-state apps; similarly U-Ill gives prefernce to Illinois residents. But, you have a great shot to the UCs, so apply to as many as you want. But, note that apps for fall '06 are due tomorrow - Berkeley and UCLA really do read the apps, but the other campuses are more numbers-driven; not all campuses accept for spring semester (Berkeley does not).

the UCs are public universities...their funding comes from the government and california residents pay the taxes that go towards the university funding.

but i think you have a fairly good chance of getting into a UC. I'm not sure about Berkeley or UCLA. also, there are no recommendation letters required for UCs (unless it works differently for out of state applicants, i'm not sure)

good luck with everything!

thanks, blue bayou.. by the way, since you live in cali.. do you mind if i ask what school you go to?

thanks hello2u.. i think i wont make it to berkeley or LA but i'll settle for UC san diego or santa barbara.. you think its worth it?

the UCs are a sweet deal if you're in-state, but I can't see why anyone would go out-of-state. For what you'll pay to attend a UC you could go to a good private school that has smaller classes, personal attention from profs, housing on/near campus, closer ties to alums, and that focuses on educating undergrads instead of grad students.

Don't get me wrong, the tradeoff in cost is well worth it for CA residents, but I scratch my head wondering why anyone from outside CA would pay full freight (estimated costs of $40K/year according to UC) to go there. And don't think they'll help out with financial aid, either; its tight enough for CA residents and there isn't enough to fund out-of-state students.

sheesh.. thats a good, clear point you've got.. its just now that i realized how much of a dumbass i am for begging to get into UC.. by the way mikemac, any suggestions on which excellent schools to go to in cali or florida?.. aside from the UC's and univ of florida, that is.. thanks.

where does it say 40k a year? I thought it was much lower.

i dont know.. thats according to mikemac. actually, i thought too that, since the UC's are state schools, they cost less.. but i'll take mikemac's word for it cuz he's from cali himself..

well on princeton review it says ~17k for out of staters so I'm gonna add another 10k for room and board which comes out to like 27k...that's not even close to 40k.

yup.. thats what i thought to. oh well.

are you apllying for UC too?.. even if your not a cali resident? (like me, poor us)

estimatd costs are easy to find on the web. just type "uc estimated cost" into google.

The very first link is the official UC system site that estimates in-state costs at $22,150 and adds out-of-state pay an additional $18,120. These numbers are for this year, BTW, and the website helpfully points out "Total costs for 2006–2007 will be higher."

omg, that's insane. X__X why am i applying here??

Don't know if this matters, but all the out-of-state students I know at UCSB think it's worth the money.

ok.. i'll rely on your word mikemac.. since, you know better cuz your from cali. thanks anyways. by the way mikemac, any suggestions on which excellent private schools to go to in cali? except stanford (duh)

rc251: what do you think out of state transfers in UCSB meant when they said "its worth the money"?.. and um, do you know what those successful out of state transfers have in common that they got accpeted in a UC school? im dying to know..

Sorry, all the ones that I know were accepted as freshmen.

oh well.. i guess im doomed. i'll be playing the guessing game then: will get accepted or not?.. hmmm.
