There are many universities that highly value community service, and that particularly appreciate it when students have independently done community service that has had impact.

Examples include when students start service programs such as when students create successful fund raising projects and tutoring programs.

Most colleges that value community service aren't judging things by the hours, but by results. There are students who'll mindlessly rack up hours in service that their parents have lined up for the students to do in order to enhance their resumes.

Students whose service impresses college have done things with their hours that show that they have commitment and passion about the service. For example, a student volunteer may have perceived a need in an organization and then developed a program to address that need.
