What University Should I Go To For Undergraduate Business?

I got into:

University of Virginia
University of Michigan
Lehigh University
University of Connecticut

Which University should I go to and why?

What would be your out-of-pocket costs for each?

Michigan and Virginia would be my top choices…best reputation and more widely recruited.

How’d you get into Lehigh already and still have a choice?

I’m pretty sure they only have Early Decision.

Another thing to keep in mind is that at UVa and Umich, you still have to apply to get into their business schools. I agree wit UCB, though, UVA and UMich are your best options and they’re also academic peers. They do, however, have very different campus cultures. Visit both and see which environment is more comfortable for you.

If money is not a consideration, attend the highest ranked b-school.

You really need to post more info on what you are looking for in a college experience as these are pretty different environments. Non-academic factors should be taken into consideration, including the relative cost (where are you from??).

I don’t know U Connecticut as well, but think it would be a clear fourth among these colleges, but the others offer very different environments for undergraduates: one campus is huge (U Michigan with 26,000+ undergrads and 40,000+ overall), one is pretty big (U Virginia with 14,000+ undergrads and 24,000+ overall) and one is relatively small (Lehigh with under 5000 undergrads and under 7000 overall). However, it should be noted that the business schools at the big schools can make the experience smaller and less impersonal.

As you probably know, Business Week ranks U Virginia’s McIntire School as the nation’s # 1 undergrad business school. U Michigan’s Ross School is ranked 4th, Lehigh is 26th and U Connecticut is not ranked in the Top 50.

Here are some of the factors that BW used and how U Virginia, U Michigan and Lehigh compare:

Length of Program , Enrollment

2 , 655 , U Virginia (McIntire)
3 , 1050 , U Michigan (Ross)
4 , 1472 , Lehigh

Ranking with Students , Ranking with Recruiters , Median Salary , MBA Feeder Strength

1 , 52 , $58,000 , 5 , U Virginia (McIntire)
18 , 8 , $60,000 , 7 , U Michigan (Ross)
44 , 31 , $55,000 , 33 , Lehigh

Academic Quality Ranking , S/F Ratio

5 , 10/1 , U Virginia (McIntire)
8 , 15/1 , U Michigan (Ross)
16 , 22/1 , Lehigh

Avg SAT , Avg ACT

1355 , 30 , U Virginia (McIntire)
1346 , 30 , U Michigan (Ross)
1293 , 29 , Lehigh

Grade for Teaching Quality

A+ , U Virginia (McIntire)
B , U Michigan (Ross)
A+ , Lehigh

Grade for Facilities & Services

A+ , U Virginia (McIntire)
A , U Michigan (Ross)
A , Lehigh

Grade for Job Placement

A+ , U Virginia (McIntire)
A+ , U Michigan (Ross)
A , Lehigh

The price of the colleges would be the following (High to Low):

Unviersity of Michigan (37K)
Lehigh (35K)
University of Virginia (33K)
UCONN (29K)

Out of those at those prices–UVa would be my choice. Smaller school but still fun. Decent weather, good social scene, less cutthroat than UM.

And about the overall experience, I am looking for an environment where I can balance both academics and social life. The size of the school doesnt really matter. Keep posting your views please…

I think one can make strong arguments for U Virginia and U Michigan as the top two, but given your preference for the best balance, I think most observers would give the nod to U Virginia. That is one of the hallmarks of the school and its graduates.

As you do your due diligence, IMO two of the BW grades merit further investigation-Student Rank and Recruiter Rank. It would seem that U Virginia students are much happier with their school (could the teaching grade be contributing to that??), but U Michigan scores very highly with recruiters and has a slightly higher median salary. If these are accurate, that could have direct consequences for the nature/quality of your undergrad experience and also for your post-graduate job opportunities. You need to talk with people on the ground at both places to see how accurately these grades reflect the reality that you will encounter as a student. Good luck!

Have you visited any of these?

I haven’t visited the schools yet but I have at least one friend who goes each of them and I’ve heard nothing but positive things for each of them.

*The price of the colleges would be the following (High to Low):

Unviersity of Michigan (37K)
Lehigh (35K)
University of Virginia (33K)
UCONN (29K) *

Are those the prices for OOS tuition alone? The OOS Cost of attendance for those schools is much higher…see below…

Non Resident Total Cost of Attendance (tuition, fees, room, board, books, misc.)

$37,922, U CONN
$42,570, U VIRGINIA
$47,188, U MICHIGAN

Are you instate for any of the above? Can you afford their costs?

Unless you’re a Connecticut resident, do NOT go to UConn. The other three schools are much better.

Well, about the cost of attendence: I am predicted to recieve about 8K in various financial aid (Pell Grants, Academic Competitiveness, etc.) because my brother is going to school and is recieving about 7K in grants.

I am from New York therefore I’m not instate for any of these schools but I’m willing to pay the cost of attendence if it’s worth the value.

What school do you believe will put me ahead in terms of Job Placement on let’s say Investment Banking?

*I am from New York therefore I’m not instate for any of these schools but I’m willing to pay the cost of attendence if it’s worth the value. *

Either UVa or UMich are great for investment banking. **HOWEVER, since you’re low income, only one can meet need for OOS students - and that’s UVa. **

When you say “willing to pay,” do you mean with student loans? Uhhhh…No one is going to lend an undergrad $40k per year for UMich (subtracting for fed aid). Were you aware of that? If your parents can’t/won’t co-sign over $150k in student loans for you, you won’t be able to pay the cost of attendance. Only med students and such can borrow that much without co-signers. Banks won’t loan that much to undergrads without families that can afford to co-sign. If you’re low income, then likely even if your parents were willing, they wouldn’t qualify.

I’m not considered “low income” bc my family has around 100K saved up for college. She used to work in investment banking and make around 200K a year untill the recession and got let go(2 years ago). I at most I would need to take out a 30K loan.

Despite being a little more expensive, I would lean towards Michigan…new facility and a more top-flight program.

The recruiter rank is telling.

But visit both and see what you like better.

UofM probably has a slightly better business program than UVA and a better reputation nationwide, but the difference in overall school atmosphere is huge. Choose from one of these two based on the overall school you liked more.

UVa also has a new building just for undergrads. Also the UVa undergrad has its own separate faculty that only teaches undergrads so they are not shared with the MBA program. I think that’s a plus. I would not put that much stock in some BW survey that moves up and down quite a bit Y over Y. UVa places very well in NY if that’s what you want. Both schools have good placement reports online and the numbers are similar.

I would lean more towards UMich if you’re interested in studying business.

So out of the list which schools would you eliminate thus far and why?
