What was your favorite and least favorite essay to write?

Favorite: all three of Stanford’s supplement essays, really, because as a whole, I thought they provided a very good reflection of my personality.
Least favorite: probably UC’s “describe the world you come from”

favorite: I agree with mp153, the 4 barnard supplements

least favorite: all the short answers for columbia! how can anyone possibly get a well developed point across with such character limits?!

Definitely agree with BobRainbow about the Chicago ‘street’ one. It took me a while to come up with an idea for it, but once I did, the ideas just kept coming, and I think the final product was pretty great, if I do say so myself, ha.

Least favorite would have to be (aside from the ‘why X?’ ones, ugh), the main Common App essay. I don’t think mine was bad or anything; I know I have excellent writing skills, but I basically had to do my essay on a topic I didn’t want. I have more than a few issues with my health, and I was advised by my college counselor to try to explain that, etc. with my essay. Would have far preferred to do something I wanted. Bleh.

The 5 colleges I applied to all asked for a significant life changing experience which I enjoyed writing about.

I worked really hard on my MIT essays, and I definitely enjoyed each one of them. They all came out with a scientific/tech-minded skew, which is convenient given the audience ;). I definitely have in-range stats for MIT, so I put a lot of effort into making myself stand out on paper, and I think I did a pretty good job. God knows I won’t get in without either a 2400 SAT or a top 40 spot in Intel, but it was fun trying anyway, right? ;p

Other than that, I paid careful attention to my Rochester essays, since that’s where I’ll probably be going when I get rejected from MIT. My common app essay came out great as well.

My 7 other schools got canned responses. I wrote an academic interests essay combined with a “why x university?” theme, and I used that as my general supplement essay. You’d be amazed how many prompts I shoehorned that one essay into, but it successfully helped me keep my sanity.

Favorite- probably one of Stanford’s supplements. The roommate essay, or intellectual vitality.
Least- I didn’t like writing middlebury’s supplement too much, but I think it’s just 'cause I wasn’t really inspired. they had good prompts.

Favorite: Why did I chose the major I did? It was for JHU and it just came so easy and natural to me.

Least Favorite: Any Why essay.
