I just wanted a perspective on how much the SAT's are stressed at MIT.

I got a 2070 on the SAT I (750M/620CR/700W)--my math is fine I just have problems with the critical reading. I'm not sure what it is, I write well and I've read large amounts of literature, but I've messed up on the CR sections on the PSAT and the SAT; maybe it's vocab.

My subject tests are alot better: 800 Physics, 800 MathIIC, 800 Chem

My academics reflect me more too (4.0 UW, IB Program) and I love swimming (Varsity) and Robotics. I visited the MIT campus a few weeks ago, and I really got addicted to it due to it's academic rigor, philosophy, enviroment, swimming pool, and proximity to Fenway (wooo baseball, although I hate the Red Sox--fun to see them loose!).

How much will my SAT's hurt me? I plan to retake them in October after some studying.

Your SATs are overall good except that Critical Reading - it’d be nice to brush up on that.

Also, SOX FOR THE WIN.

I learned over the past year (my son will attend MIT starting next month) is that you’ll be competitive as long as each SAT or SAT-II score is in the range of 700 or better. One lesser score probably will not hurt you. Everyone who applies to MIT has great scores, though, so it’s just as important to have excellent, engaging essays and one or two extracurriculars you’ve pursued for awhile (not just senior year) that show depth of interest and commitment.

Good luck.

The admit rate for students with Critical Reading scores in the 750-800 range was 21% last year, versus 11% for students with reading scores in the 600-640 range. SAT score ranges can be found here (for the class entering in 2007): [MIT Admissions: Admissions Statistics](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/admissions_statistics/index.shtml)

If you’re serious about MIT, consider your options. You should be able to find out if you’re doing poorly on the vocabulary questions simply by looking over your previous SAT answers. If that’s your area of weakness, rather than reading comprehension, then you might consider taking the ACT rather than the SAT. You can find some online practice tests on the ACT website, and by trying a few, you can discover whether you perform better on the ACT, which does not include sections to test vocabulary. MIT will accept ACT scores.

I am considering taking the ACT, because from what I’ve heard it might fit me better. I couldn’t take the last one unfortunately because I was visiting colleges.

And I do have two extracurriculars that I pursue with ardor (FIRST Robotics and Swimming).

God, next month? It seems so close. I hope January hurries up - I can’t wait to get back.
