My son is a 10th grader and thinking of JMU. He just got his PSAT scores today. I have NO clue what average scores are for PSATs and what this might mean related to his future SATs. His score was 112 (add zero to equal SATs they say so 1120). Thanks.

I would not panic, but I think it means that he could use some tutoring to prepare for the SAT for next spring. A 10th grader will often have lower scores than a junior, afterall they have an entire school year to learn more and to mature. You should have received a score sheet that explain's your son's scores. It also should tell you which type of questions he answered correctly and incorrectly. It also gives you the correct answer so he could go over it in his test booklet. If you don't have this info, perhaps you should contact his GC.

You might get more help by posting this on the SAT prep board here on CC.

PSATs do not mean all that much sophomore year (unless you want to be a national merit scholar). I didn't do too well on the PSATs but my SAT scores were pretty good. Have your son take a prep course, or have him study a lot for the SAT's. I took a prep course before my first SAT, and if I didn't, I guarantee my score would have been much lower. Good luck!
