Has UCLA announced how much undergraduate education will cost for OOS students starting from September 2010? I have been hearing about the 32% increase in tuition and fees for in-state students compared to last year. But how about OOS students? I had the same question about UC Berkeley as well. I am talking about the total COA which includes room and board and assumes that the student will reside in the UC dorm.

Thanks in advance.

I am very concerned about the enormous increase in fees and how unaffordable college education has become these days.

The 32% increase doesn’t apply to OOS tuition, but I don’t think they’ve announced next year’s fees yet. It probably won’t be a drastic increase… maybe $52k.

Actually just saw that estimate is $52,581. Last year it was $49,371. I suppose that is a lot, though it’s just an estimate. The most common type of room/board ~$3k less than the price listed, and it’s also possible to save a few thousand on books/transportation/personal expenses if you’re frugal.

As a comparison, HYP were $35k-$37k for tuition/fees this past year, while UCLA will be $33k for OOS.

I can’t think of a state university system that is more unaffordable for out-of-state students that the UC system. I do wonder where they’re finding the money for a lot of the international student assistance they’re giving.

^^ I don’t know but even for in-state there aren’t a lot of merit scholarships. There’s the Regents Scholarship but given the competition from the very high stats applicants to UCLA (which receives more applications than any other Uni in the country the last I heard), it’s a difficult scholarship to be offered.

About 800 out of more than 55k applicants are offered a chance to apply for the UCLA Regents Scholarship, with only a few hundred actually given out. I believe the actual award is $2k + full financial need, which doesn’t amount to much if you’re going to be full pay. There are other scholarships available for people in College Honors, mostly $1k-$5k depending on need.

I have a feeling that the UC colleges will admit a lot more OOS students this fall to make up for the reduced financial support from the CA government. Even in this economy there must be many rich parents willing to plunk down $50K+/ year for their kids’ education. Perhaps the admission standards may be lowered a tad bit to attract the OOS dollars.

The upper middle class from out-of-state may end up the loser in all this. They are neither too poor to qualify for financial aid nor too rich to afford the full sticker price.

Overall this trend does not augur well for the country. College education is becoming increasingly a rich man’s privilege.

UCB already publicly stated they’d be accepting more out of state students for Fall 2010 due to the increased fees out of state students are required to pay.
