I am mostly asking, I am a strong writer, and I am passionate on studying that in college, what can I do besides good scores and ECs to show college I care about writing, and what should I do to show them I would be well-rounded enough for their program. Any advice is appreciated
I would suggest getting involved with the literary magazine or newspaper at your school, or if there isn’t one, starting one. You could also start your own blog.
You should definitely try to get the highest grades possible in English classes, and maybe look for summer programs that emphasize writing. You could also tutor other students in writing. Lastly, you could take AP Lit, AP Lang and the SAT II Lit test, to really drive home that writing is your passion.
Thank you so much! My school does not have a newspaper, but I intend on starting one(just a little apprehensive). Could you put blog writer on a college application? I get 90-100’s in English, and totally plan on taking AP Lit and Lang in eleventh and twelfth, thats when they offer those classes. I went to Duke’s Writing Summer Program. I am not sure when how I’d reach out to tutor kids? And not sure what to do on a blog? @yonceonhismouth thanks again
I write a blog on topics that interest me- you can just list it as an activity, I wrote about it in the “Additional Info” section of the Common App.
As for tutoring, you could talk to your headmaster and see if there is a way for you to offer to tutor kids who want extra help with English. You could also look for a local boys and girls club and offer to help the kids with their homework.
Will definitely do that in the Fall!!! Thank you again!!! You really helped me with my plans! @yonceonhismouth
This is boring advice but it’s simple. It’s much more important that you excel on your transcript and scores than to market yourself as a great & committed writer. Transcript and scores will be much greater eval factors than your writing in 95% of cases. Unless you’re targeting the most competitive schools where they have a surfeit of high stats applicants, ECs really don’t come into play much at all.
