This year I took Spanish I in middle school and came out with a 92 for the semester. I got a 91 for the first term and a 89 for the second. Will colleges see that I got an 89 on my second term?
If you are counting your Spanish grades as high school grades, they will be seen the same as your high school grades. It depends on how your school reports grades. you don’t have to use middle school grades if you don’t want the credits.
I think you’re a little young to be worrying about this now. But no, colleges usually don’t see your middle school grades.
I think the first post was correct.
My son has 8 credits from middle school that will transfer in to his high school. The grades will show up on his high school transcript but not be calculated for GPA purposes. Interestingly, in Spanish he had A’s for three quarters but a B for one of the quarters but an A overall. We are hoping that only final A is shown on the transcript but do not know yet.
Here is the answer:
Having said that, even if you take a HS class in MS, and even if it appears on a HS transcript, colleges will put close to zero weight on that grade. Colleges care about what you did the 3.5 years before you send in your application (and some colleges discount freshman grades as well). There are many things about the admissions process which can cause sleepless nights; this is not one of them.
If it is a high school class taken in middle school you would need to talk to your advisor and find out what is on your HS transcript. There is no uniform policy.
But you are in middle school. It is good to take school seriously and know that college is somewhere off in the horizon. But for now you should focus on:
–Working hard, learning, and doing as well as you can in the most challenging curriculum you can manage.
–Get involved in things you care about and work towards making meaningful contributions to those activities.
–Enjoying spending time with your family and friends.
–When the time comes study for standardized tests.
Keep in mind that middle school and high school are not just college prep experiences – they should be times of academic, social, intellectual growth and development. When the time comes years down the road it will then be time to to asses your academic stats, financial constraints, preferences and apply accordingly.
For now, you need to relax and do your best.
My son’s 8th-grade math semester grades show up on his high school transcript. I heard that also the foreign language does as well. The guidance counselors claim that they don’t factor into GPA, they are just there to show that you have taken that course.
In some locales the grade gets put on the HS transcript as pass/fail
I think it depends on your school district, I have credit form middle school but my high school doesnt show it on my transcript. I think they only show that you received credit for the class. I doubt that colleges will even see your middle school grades.
My daughter’s school will list the HS credits earned in middle school and the semester grades but they are not included in the HS GPA. For curiosity’s sake, I independently calculated her GPA with those credits included (5 classes, so 10 semester A’s), it only changed her GPA by 0.0125 point. I wouldn’t worry too much about it if I were you.
Not to add to your worry, but in our HS, all the grades that count for credit, including accelerated language, get included in the weighted GPA used for determining class rank. DS had a perfect 100 in his 7th and 8th grade language courses, and his best friend had earned a 95 and 100. He and his best friend were very competitive, both loading up on AP classes, both getting virtually perfect grades in HS, and they both had wondered after Sophomore year why DS was thousandths of a percentage point higher. It turns out that in our district the middle school grades apply if the classes were used to fulfill the district graduation requirement of taking a language. His friend took a summer computer programming language course and earned a perfect score, and worked with the GC to have that apply as his language, so by the start of the junior year, they were again neck and neck.
It is not unusual for very bright kids to want to understand and replicate the calculations themselves, especially when there are financial implications like a full tuition scholarship based on class rank.
DS ended up taking one more AP course and earned the top spot, but both kids ended up in the best spot for themselves. I am happy that they remain great friends - DS was just asked to be his best man.
I would suggest that OP have a discussion with the GC, but not worry too much about this. It is a good idea to get to know your GC anyway, and this is a painless enough exercise for them to describe if and how the information could get forwarded to potential colleges.
Our schools don’t give any credits or include anything taken before 9th grade on transcripts. It is implied to colleges that you did say Spanish 1 before high school if you start high school in Spanish 2. For math you still need to take 4 math credits starting in 9th grade to get a high school diploma. Language taken in middle school just starts you at a higher level but you still need two years of language classes taken while in high school to get a high school diploma.
^^^^Our HS transcript HS level classes taken in middle school, includes the final grade, and the grade is included in the GPA. No semester or quarter grades are shown on the HS transcript that is sent to colleges. The lack of uniformity on this from school to school is exactly why the OP needs to speak to an advisor/guidance counselor in his/her school to know the answer. The only thing that is uniform is that college admissions officers will see that it was a class taken in middle school.
