I’ve just been admitted to Harvard SCEA (YAY!) and I have two tests tomorrow. I plan on studying but I don’t know if I’ll do well. It got me thinking - what can get my acceptance rescinded? Do they review each QUARTER, or just the MID-YEAR, or just the final grades?? What is the approximate amount I’d need to mess up to get rescinded? FOR THE RECORD - I plan on CONTINUING to TRY and get STRAIGHT As!!! I’m not “getting lazy” or “showing unpreparedness” for college. I’m just anxious!
Its pretty late already to “plan on studying”. Hope you are digging in now.
Failing one or two tests wont cost you admission but you need to get back in the saddle and stay there. Admission to an Ivy is a huge deal and you need to be ready to be a serious student-college is hard. Resist that senior slump.
Other things that might get you rescinded (besides bad grades) are alcohol and drug use. This is also true during Visitas. Plagiarism is another thing. In addition, be respectful and appropriate on Harvard FB and GroupMe chats.
5.5 hours later and you’re posting what will it take for you to lose your Harvard EA acceptance. That’s not nervousness, that’s a complete lack of perspective. Did you read the EA results and EA discussion threads after the decisions? You got the golden ticket.
Do you think it now hangs on a thread? If you were harvard and just rejected/deferred thousands of super applicants, choosing to admit a scant few (and fully aware that about 90% of them will eventually attend), do you think it’d be in your best interest to sniff them for any sign of weakening? Think about it. Stop this nervousness. It’s unbecoming – especially in the context of thousands of shattered dreams at 5:03PM on Dec 13.
How to avoid getting rescinded? Avoid Ds, Fs, Felonies and Fraud.
Congrats and try to act normal again. You’ll be fine.
Do you have imposter’s syndrome? Are you feeling as if you didn’t deserve this deep down, or that Harvard made a mistake? Google imposter’s syndrome!
Google Owen Labrie and don’t be like him.
It is always interesting to me that so many CC folks feel it necessary to comment without any real data. I have only anecdotal data, so perhaps I belong in this group as well. In my opinion, which is informed by actual hearsay , I think it is wise for students to recognize that they CAN INDEED do themselves harm. Too many times students who have been accepted to a HYSPM (etc.) school feel they can “do no harm,” that they “got a golden ticket,” that they are the masters of the universe, etc. It is wise to downplay your incredible good luck and to do nothing to imperil that luck, and since you were smart enough to be accepted, you should understand the reasons why. It is simple good sense, not imposter’s syndrome.
Based on anecdotal evidence, Harvard does rescind acceptance letters. My children reported that students’ acceptances were rescinded due to drug and/or alcohol use, especially over Visitas when a few admittees got drunk and/or high on campus. Also, reports seem to confirm that a few students were rescinded when they made egregious comments on social media. It would be much harder to know about students whose acceptance was rescinded due to poor grades or plagiarism, and I do not know of any Harvard-specific instances. At our high school, however, I do know of one student whose ED acceptance to Dartmouth was rescinded in the summer after he bombed his classes and his IB exams. Because he had applied ED, he literally had no college options when he learned about this decision in July. I also know of students who have had acceptances rescinded (though none of them were going to Harvard) when they were caught plagiarizing a paper or cheating on an exam.
I have told my own two children who were incredibly fortunate to be accepted to Harvard: Be humble. Be hardworking. Be gracious. Continue to give activities and academics 100% throughout the rest of your high school experience. This should be a matter of personal integrity, honor, and pride.
Whatever you do, do not drink at visitas. Don’t fail courses. You’ll be fine otherwise.
@grandscheme studying can easily be done within a night, especially for only two tests? what are you talking about
All admits who are not sociopaths have imposter’s syndrome. Who has the chutzpah to be completely devoid of doubt? W
Geez, some of you… stop being mean. Congrats on being accepted. Don’t even think about this. You’ll be fine.
