If you’re trying to look mature and successful, wear a button down. I don’t think that polos exude a mature or successful image. They’re “golf shirts.” Either way, I think that looking manly beats looking like a yacht boy or golfer. How often do male celebrities wear polos? Almost never. Especially the one’s who play up their masculinity like colin farrell and whatnot.

Imo, a button down looks best with nice pants or nice shorts, whereas a polo looks good either with nice pants/shorts or with jeans. In general, polos are more relaxed and casual. Plus, wearing a polo is much more convenient in the summer, especially if you live in a place like Texas.

“Either way, I think that looking manly beats looking like a yacht boy or golfer.”

I’m sorry, but I look a lot more like Hayden Christensen than I do Colin Farrell. If I tried to look “manly,” I’d look awkward because a. I probably don’t like the clothes that you would deem manly and b. I feel more comfortable and think I look better in your so-called less manly yacht boy/golfer clothes. If you don’t like the clothes you’re wearing, chances are you’re not going to look good in them.

I wear button downs with jeans. There are casual button downs that are meant to be worn like that. i don’t really consider clothes manly in themselves (except some coats). For example, like I said, I wear mostly basic dark crew neck t’s. But there are clothes that are feminine or dorky looking. But there’s no point arguing about the polos anymore. We all have our own style that we think works best.

Hey, polos and button downs are both great.

You can look good/ cool with just a simple polo shirt, you just aren’t going to stand out or win any style points for a simple solid one.

A polo shirt is basically an upgraded t-shirt - where you look a little more dressed and can get into clubs (not that that’s much concern).

^ If you want to earn style points, http://images.halloweencostume.com/realistic-spiderman-costume.jpg

Ooops! Fallacy alert!

You haven’t established that there’s not an overlap here. Manly people can look like boaters or golfers. Why is my statement less reasonable than yours?

Brad Pitt wears polos all the time. Other celebrities do all the time. Would you like pictures?

Yeah, they’re called the ugly, tacky ones. Do you also wear patent leather shoes with jeans?

ahahahaha. fallacy alert? I’m not surprised that you wear polos. I barely ever see celebrities wearing polos although ofcourse you can type “brad pitt polo” in google and get some pictures.

Also, this discussion about celebrities is irrelevant unless we’ve established some reason to include it.

Ok, but most people are going around counting up their “style points” or worrying about what was in Vogue lately. As a girl I’d kinda be turned off by that, dating someone overly concerned with their image and the latest trendiest thing and all that. Clean jeans and a sense of humor are always in fashion, just sayin’ : )

As a girl I love summer because i can slip on a simple dress everyday (something casual and summery, like this with flat shoes. If i was trying to get attention I might wear a fun hat. People say my head looks delightful in hats.

i should start a fashion magazine and take advantage of women’s and now, apparently, men’s insecurities

You can never go wrong with college apparel.
Well maybe for casual events.

When some of you that you wear blazers, cardigans, khakis et cetera; do you mean during the week? Or weekends when you don’t have classes.

I wear khakis all the time, but blazers only for formal events. I don’t wear cardigans or cable knit sweaters either. But otherwise I wear what i deem casual, regardless of the day of the week.

I wear flat front khakis sometimes. The cardigans and blazers are for formal events.

I know this is from a few pages back, but I’m just curious: do average Joes really have $35 to spend on one shirt? That price seems a little steep to me…

I’m of the opinion that well-dressed college students are compensating for something else that they lack. This becomes especially evident further up in academia, where the people who are getting horrible data tend to wear dresses and suits to conferences.

I chortle a bit as I am vindicated when I see all the business majors wearing suits to class.

the hell? are you serious? do you not have a sense of style of your own?

if you’re really that prone to copy trends, go look at fashion sites, like style.com, forever21.com, etc. there’s always trends for guys out there.

35 would be a little steep for me, too. I tend to buy polos in the 20-30 range and typically either on sale and/or at an outlet. At a Brooks Brothers outlet that I went to a few weeks ago, they had 3 polos/$79…so about $28/shirt after tax.

I spend $5 for colored tees and ~$10 for 3 white tees. I don’t really buy anything else, so these prices are pretty much set in stone until inflation kicks in :). And yes, I am an average Joe.

Since you ask about average Joes I assume you’re not one. Our of curiousity, what would you call yourself? Deviating Debra? Anomalous Andrea?

Phew! I thought I was the only one whose eyes were spinning at the types of prices being thrown around here. While I don’t buy the same things, I do typically purchase clothing items in that price range.

Well, not really. I’m quite a penny pincher and consider myself to lead a pretty staid, semi-middle class existence.

Hm. I think I’ll go with Kaleidoscopic K*****.
There are not a lot of good “k” words. :(

I guess it would seem expensive if you don’t have a job.
