What would be a good major for this career?

If I hadn’t made the choice to get a degree in music, I think I would have ended up being a detective of some sort and worked with law enforcement. I’m very analytical and enjoy doing research and have always been drawn to mysteries. Just out of curiosity, what would someone who hopes to have a career in something like this pick as a major? The closest ones I can think of are Criminal Justice with a Criminology/Law Enforcement track or Forensic Science, maybe even Criminal Psychology or something similar. What do you guys think?

Your interests seem to go well with Forensics.

Setting yourself up to be police detective or even a private investigator is basically a matter of graduating from a police academy and serving as a regular police officer for several months or years (http://learn.org/articles/Police_Detective_Career_Profile_Job_Outlook_and_Education_Requirements.html and http://www.bls.gov/ooh/protective-service/private-detectives-and-investigators.htm).

You could major in anything - there’s no specific major that being a police officer or going into law enforcement requires. In fact, you might be better off NOT majoring in criminal justice - since many law enforcement agencies could use people with different, harder-to-find skills like computer science (cyber crimes) or finance/accounting (financial crimes!) There are lots of different kinds of crimes that can use lots of skill sets.

That said, the most obvious majors would be criminal justice or forensic science. Many colleges don’t have one of those majors, so the closest subs might be sociology or psychology.
