What would look better for admissions?

I know rigor of curriculum is very important...and most here repeat the old stand by line to take the most challenging schedule available. That might be all well and good for the very top students, but how about everyone else? Sure many "good" students can take all honors and AP classes, but GPA would most likely suffer. Getting all B's in honors/AP might sound OK, but that's only a 3.0 unweighted GPA There has to be a balance between honors/Ap and GPA.

So, my question is: what would look better for admissions

1) Taking mostly honors/AP classes and having a 3.0 GPA
2) Taking 2 honors classes a year and maybe 2-3 total AP classes and having a 3.7 unweighted GPA

What do you think would look better for admissions? Obviously, I'm not talking top 50 schools here, but the next level down.

Option 2 by far. Even if you’ve taken 10 AP courses, a 3.0 looks very very poor.

Edit: I just read you’re not even talking about Top 50 Schools. Then it is Definitely Option 2. Most people applying to non-top 50 schools don’t have that rigorous of a schedule.

UVA…I agree, but I hear so often that students should take the hardest schedule available and that getting a straight B in honors/AP is OK. The problem with that line of reasoning is that a straight B is a 3.0 GPA…which most would agree is not that good. A “very good” but not top student could probably handle the toughest schedule, but with straight Bs.

I understand your frustration. The clich
