<p>You can do it anyway you want. For me, I did a small story before it because I thought that will show a bit of my personality along with the technical aspect. Also, so that what I made doesn't seem completely random and useless XP.</p>

<p>The optional essays are genuinely optional, but certainly writing a good, memorable optional essay can help your odds of being admitted. So the optional essays are extra credit, but in this game you need all the credit you can get.</p>
