What's a good engineering school for merit scholarships?

@mom2collegekids
The base price is $19k after the full tuition scholarship. Subtract $2500 for engineering, and another $3k for downgrading the dorm.
That leaves approximately $13-14k

Do you know any other schools that offer large merit aid? So far I’ve found Howard, American, and maybe Scripps.

UA Huntsville is very generous as well I’ve heard.

American U and Scripps do not have engineering. They are also extremely expensive private schools, so while they might give you some merit aid, the odds of getting merit aid reducing your net cost to $12K are practically nil.

@BobWallace American University has a full ride scholarship http://www.american.edu/financialaid/fdsprogram.cfm

Scripps is off the list: I didn’t know it’s a Women’s College :expressionless:

I acknowledge that American U has a full ride scholarship. I simply said that the odds of winning it are very, very low. Many colleges have full ride scholarships, and many, many students apply for them.

Plus…American University does not have engineering…so if that is your intended major, so what if they have a full rid scholarship.

@thumper1 I’m open to studying Computer Science if engineering doesn’t work out

I’m not sure I understand your arithmetic on U of Alabama. Between the full tuition scholarship, the added $2500, a $5500 Direct Loan, and the $12000 your parents can contribute, you should be able to cover the cost of attendance at University of Alabama.

@thumper1 I can’t get any loans because I don’thave a cosigner. I’m just looking at my options if I don’t get into a prestigious university with financial aid.
And $12k is like the very maximum I could get my parents to pay…They’re actually hoping for less than $10k

Oh that’s right…I forgot you are an international student!

Did you look at the least expensive housing and meal plan options?

After frosh year, the meal plan cost can go down a LOT, or be completely eliminated at Bama. Only frosh year requires the pricey plan.

Can someone suggest other colleges that might work for me? So far I have Louisiana and Alabama to consider.

http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/ lists the following for a 3.77 HS GPA and 34 ACT and residual cost under $12,000:

Alabama - Tuscaloosa
Alabama - Huntsville
Tuskegee
Howard
Louisiana Tech
Prairie View A&M
Utah State

But you may have to verify with each school as to whether international students are eligible.

Is Wisconsin one of the states that allows undocumented students who graduate from their high schools to attend at instate tuition rates? If so, your best bet may be to do that and live at home. Even OOS rate at the smaller state schools is not that high. Whitewater and Superior both have good engineering programs. Stevens Point has excellent bio and chem programs.

@twoinanddone I’m not an illegal immigrant. I’m a LEGAL resident of Wisconsin. I live in the Milwaukee area, so I obviously can’t go to Madison or Whitewater while living at home. I think I’ll just have to look for scholarships. I am applying to Dartmouth Early decision though, state schools are backups if I don’t get in.

Has someone mentioned Temple University? You are eligible for a full tution scholarship plus stipends. You can probably live in a coop to save some money if the dorm costs too much.

Also investigate Rice Univ, Trimity Univ in San Antonio, Colorado School of Mines, UMD College Park and Clemson.
Rice is a bit of a reach but has excellent financial aid if you qualify for aid.

No, neither Whitewater nor Superior have engineering at all. Madison, Platteville and Milwaukee do.

Univ New Mexico?
