What's a good engineering school for merit scholarships?

@txstella I’m definitely considering Rice. I’m pretty competitive, so I’m applying to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth as my number one choices due to their huge financial aid. Rice doesn’t give financial aid to international students very much but I’ll see if I get something. They do have merit aid.

I didn’t say you were illegal, but some states require the student to be a citizen to get instate tuition rates or the best scholarships. You said you were going to be processed as an international student, and they don’t normally get instate rates. Some states give the IS rate to those who graduate from a state high school, others don’t. If you live in Milwaukee, go to UW-Milwaukee. Or Marquette has good scholarships.

@twoinanddone Thank you for your reply. I’m a legal expat attending a Wisconsin high school, I am eligible for in state tuition. I believe Marquette has pretty good scholarships but they’re not for international students. If I don’t get accepted to my top choices, I think I’ll end up at UW Madison somehow.

UW-Madison will cost more than $12,000 per year.

UW Milwaukee has the engineering major, and is affordable for this student if he commutes.

I’m addition to being to pay $12k per year, my parents also have $40k on cash for me. So UW Madison might work out, especially if I get scholarships.

Don’t count on any scholarships from UW-Madison. Are you referring to outside scholarships?

Here is a possible financial safety for you: UT Dallas. This scholarship comes with in-state tuition. UTD is a good STEM school. There is also a competitive full ride scholarship.

Academic Honors Scholarship. Average ACT is 34
Complete coverage of UT Dallas tuition and mandatory fees
$3,000 per semester cash stipend to defray the costs of books, supplies and other expenses
Total estimated value over four academic years: $71,224
Based on the estimated cost of tuition and fees, room and board, and books and supplies for full-time undergraduate students living on campus during the 2014-2015 academic year, the Honors Scholarship reduces the approximate cost of attendance at UT Dallas from $22,603 to $4,797 each academic year.

Do they have a business?

@Madison85 You’re right that UW Madison isn’t known for scholarships for incoming students. They have a ton of scholarships for enrolled students, however.

@txstella The Academic Honors scholarship looks really good. Thanks for sharing!

@mom2collegekids No my father is a salaried engineer making $55k.
I’m doing more research and the University of Southern California is something I can consider. They offer 20 Full tuition scholarships every year. And they have a good engineering program too

University of alabama huntsville. They will give full ride for ACT of 34 and I believe GPA of 3.75 on up.

Just found out about the University of Mississippi, I qualify for free tuition there.

Any chance at NMSF?

I didnt take the PSAT, so no NMSF.

Are you sure that your Wisconsin resident parents who are citizens of another country will qualify you for in-state rates at UW-Madison?

The link has a section that sounds like it’s stating that a certain statute to that effect was repealed in 2011.

You may want to contact the Office of the Registrar to double check.

Please provide link(s) to the tons of scholarships available to continuing students at UW-Madison. I would love to find some plentiful scholarships that are more than $500-$2000.

@Madison85 Here’s the link:

It lists all the scholarships at UW Madison. Almost all of them are for currently enrolled students, there’s not much for incoming freshmen.

Also, I can confirm that I qualify for instate tuition. I’m on a H4 visa, the website explicitly states that students on such a visa get in state tuition.

I thought you said $12,000 a year was too much and parents want to keep it at $10k? Or does it depend on the school.
