What's a good Graduation Gift?

For those in college, did you get any cool graduation presents from your high school friends? Please list :)

things i got for college graduation... money, dvds, stuff like that. the weirdest thing was a plant.. which i was allergic to.

my parents are getting me new luggage for graduation...

how exciting.....I guess I'll appreciate it later though

hey, i got luggage for high school graduation and it's probably the best present i've ever gotten. its great for packing to go to school, and i take a lot of vacations with my friends and has really helped out. we're going to north carolina for ten days in about a week which im def. looking forward to.

it's helped me out with four weeklong trips to florida, a dozen trips to new york, various trips to washington dc, etc... great gift.

:)

I got money and bought a laser printer with it. One year later I still have the original toner! So much better than dropping $30 on ink every other Tuesday (and then realizing two months later I could have just bought a new printer for the same cost). The rest of the money I got went toward the laptop, which I already had saved some for. It was either laptop money or get a trip to New York, which would have meant I would have had to keep my now 6 year old G3 iBook (a vintage tangerine model!)

I'm currently working on a hand-built desk clock for one of my friends for her graduation. I will be buying the mechanics early next week or maybe tomorrow. When you have a friend who is like your own sister, you have to give her something awesome.

I'm getting mostly jewelry. It's a tradition in my family to give jewelry for graduations. I'll probably also get some money, I'm hoping enough to buy this really awesome handbag I want, one can hope.

The jewelry will mean a lot to me because it has such sentimental value, most of it will likely be engraved. My mother still has all the jewelry from her high school and college graduations.

i am going to London...

i think a good job may be the best gift for me .

My parents paid for my trip this summer....I am going to Greece & Italy for 2 weeks...I'm beyond stoked!!!
I'm also going to get money [a lot hopefully :) ] some horrible sweaters from my relatives (its tradition!)

haha I really don't want anything. My school is giving me a computer. I'll think of SOMETHING though or perhaps I'll defer my gift to another time...

I get a new Mac laptop and 1K for whatever I want (probably spending money on my summer trip to Europe, a digital camera, a bike, etc.) My parents are also paying for my plane tickets to Europe this summer.

We gave our son his 1st cell phone LOL - but seriously - for the kid who didn't really want anything - we gave him a round trip ticket to anywhere of his choice - at some point in his future. He LOVED that - several months after graduation he had an invite to a place he really wanted to go - and asked for his gift then - and had an awesome time for himself.

Another nice give - that will last for a awhile is - the official frame for one's diploma - just an idea...............

If you're looking for something practical, gift cards to Staples or Bed Bath and Beyond are awesome.

OOO sooo sorry - I misread the OP - gifts from friends - oops - my idea was a bit extravagent for that LOL.......... sorry

I'm going to ask for a Video iPod.

I think I'm going to use whatever cash I get to take a Eurotrip with my buddies.

Bed Bath and Beyond!!!
will be The next store I hit up! thank you :)

If it's not considered rude to ask, what is a good/average gift card amount to give a graduating friend?

Depends on your financial situation and where the GC is for...anything over $25 should be fine for a casual friend, but adjust the amount accordingly if you're giving a GC to a pricey store.

Around here $20 is typical for a friend. If it's a really good friend, the gift is typically something more sentimental, but if it's a gift card it's still about $20

So far I've sort of accidentally opened two graduation presents. They're both cookbooks. I think that's a really good present (if the person likes to cook) and especially if it's an "everyday meal" sort of cookbook. Like, nothing fancy... just cheap and simple ways of making good food :). Then again, at most colleges there are meal plans.
From my parents I'm supposedly getting a laptop (for college) and the rest I don't know yet. Probably money.
