My D did a mock test for the SAT Korean language with listening. Her score was 390. We are not Korean nor Asians. She just is interested in the language and tought herself Korean language using books and took a summer Korean course at a university (Korean language is not tought at her high school).

Q. She is registered for the next SAT Korean language with listening test. Given her practice test score of 390 should she still take the test or should she cancel? I heard that most of those taking the Korean language sat test are Korean American originally which is why the average score is so high (above 700 i think). However since my D is not a native speaker and just recently took up Korean 1.5 yrs ago, does that get taken into consideration?

We were told by a college admissions counselor not to take a language SAT II test because it’s so heavily skewed by native speakers. I wouldn’t take it if she’s not going to score at least above 600 but then again, I don’t know what schools or ranges she needs.

I don’t really understand why it’s like that because I’ve taken 7 years of Spanish and it’s a core subject of mine. But I’m glad I didn’t take it because my practice was in the 400s and I got a 750 on English Lit and 760 on Math 1, both much better scores!

For SAT Korean the national average is 769, so I would say anything that is not an 800 would be a good score. However if it is just the sake of having “fun” then do as long as college DON’T receive it as it looks really really bad.

P.s not to be mean just saying the truth.

One would expect that colleges would understand that a student who studied a language for 3 or 4 yrs will be higher than somebody who studied it for 2-2 yrs, or was self tought. Its just not fair to compare the score of a native Korean speaker to the score of a non Korean speaking household.

Do take the test. even self taught a score below500 will not ‘prove’ more than she can say on the common app. However she should not forget to mention self teaching such a difficult language on her applications. Typically colleges aren’t interested go language scores below 650 though so don’t send the score.

Asian language tests tend to be really easy…so don’t worry…
