I just want some people to share what a typical week for them is, either an existing student or an existing engineer. Like how much time do you spend on homework or out with friends, in class, or maybe how much work do you have to do at home if you already have a job. Just some general information would be appreciated

Owning our two-person engineering firm, my husband and I work weird hours. Yes, a LOT of weekends. But then sometimes, like today, we take off and enjoy a long lunch, or just go to the beach for the day. At least we get paid for most of our hours, unlike when we were salaried employees putting in 60+ hours a week! We will never go back to working for anyone else. It’s just a different feeling, working hard when you know it’s for YOUR firm.

what type of engineering firm? =)

go out on friday OR saturday night and do homework with the rest.

rsala - structural consulting.

Job: Junior Scientist (Sensor Processing & Networking)
Student Status: Part-time grad student (Computer Science)
Type of Company: Small, specialized defense contractor

I work 40 hours/week, usually 8:30 to 4:30 or so. During crunch time I might have to work late, but that doesn’t happen very often. I don’t take work home with me, though I occasionally take scholarly journals home from work to catch up on developments in the field. I don’t work weekends.

I take 1-2 classes/semester, and spend probably 8-10 hours/week/class. Generally at least half of this is over the weekend.

I do American Jiu-Jitsu 4 hours/week (in 2-hour increments), run 10-15 miles/week, lift weights, occasionally play in live-action role-playing games, and do activist work.

I also spend a fair amount of time reading mystery novels and such, watching movies and TV, and hanging out with my boyfriend. He usually cooks dinner for both of us when we’re together in the evening, because he’s a good cook and I’m not.

All in all, I feel less hosed as a worker/grad student than I did as an undergrad.

Student in MSE at VT, I’ll give you a quick rundown of a week this last semester.
Monday: Class basically from 9am-7pm, with a few hour long breaks sprinked throughout that I spend eating/doing homework. Monday night I have a standing date to watch House with a few people and then I go back and do homework.
Tuesday: Class from 8-3, with two hour and a half breaks in between where I can eat or do homework. I go to the gym after my 3 class lets out, then go back and finish up any homework for wednedsay that I might have (generally not too much) and then I’m free to do whatever.
Wednesday: Class from 9-12, with a break in between for lunch. I go to the gym after my 12 class lets out and it’s basically the same as after class on tuesdays
Thursday: See Tuesday.
Friday: See Wednesday, but I generally don’t do any homework after class is out. If I have something huge I’ll work, but usually I’m free on Friday afternoons and evenings (and nights, of course) to do whatever I want.
Saturday: Wake up around 12 or 1, especially if I went out the previous night. Eat something. Chill with some friends and repeat Friday night.
Sunday: Wake up late again, then do homework for Monday, which usually meant spending a couple hours writing a lab report.

Overall Mondays are generally the only day that I don’t have much time to spend with friends, and even then I nearly always am able to hang out with a certain group for an hour, and/or grab lunch with them.

I’m a PhD student in materials science. During the week: class early mornings, lab from ~ 11 am to 6-7 pm, dinner/break, study from ~9 pm to midnight.

Weekend: go out after work on Friday, go into work late on Saturday and work about 5-6 hours. Study the rest of the weekend, taking breaks as necessary. Rarely (once every couple of months), I’ll go out on a Saturday night, too. If I have a test early in the coming week, I won’t go out on Friday. Really, just more lab work and less studying than I had as an undergrad…

CS, have it a bit light this semester but last semester, Fri night gave some time for relaxing…Sat/Sun work the whole day and every night of the weekdays till 3-4AM every day

During undergrad, I usually did work on Saturdays during the morning and afternoon and I spend Sunday mornings on errands. Friday and Saturday nights were usually free for me to go out or do whatever.

Systems Engineer for defense contractor. Only times I work on the weekends are when I’m on travel (the more I get done the quicker I get home). Travel a few times a year. I never bring work home when i’m not on travel and i’m not allowed to work more than 80/2wk without approval since all work is under government contract.

How did “what’s an average weekend for you?” prompt responses for the entire week?

He asked for the whole week in the post, I went with that over the title.
