What's another way to say..

"I was afraid to mess up, and, if I did, I was hard on myself."

I don't know, but it sounds kinda weird to me. Are there any other ways to phrase this? Thanks!

I feared making mistakes, which made situations tough. As I made mistakes, I grew more harsh on myself.

I was always afraid of making a mistake. And when I made one, I was hard on myself.

Try removing the second and third comma and reading it out loud.

I was afraid to mess up; I was hard on myself whenever I messed up. I think it sounds fine the way it is. It gets the message across and that’s what’s important.
