What's Best for GE??!!!

Hey I'm an upcoming freshman at a top science/math university. I'll be majoring in Biochem this Fall, but I was wondering that if I want a career in genetic engineering (especially gene therapy), is Biochem the route to travel or should I go with Chem Eng?

I do plan to go to graduate school for Biochem or Genetics, but is Biochem for undergraduate a bad idea? I'm really interested in Biochem...genetics...drug design and delivery! I want to work in genetic engineering as a medical scientist for either an institution like Salk, L'Institute Pasteur, NIH, Rockefeller or a Biotech company like Genetech, Amgen, Genzyme.

On the contrary, my school has the #9 Chem & Biomolec Eng program, but I'm not into engineering as much as a research science. My school also has Chem Eng, with a Biotech option, where I would take Biochem, Bio, and Chem courses in place of some generic Eng classes. I thought about Chem Eng because it has great job opportunities at the BS level.

Biochem vs Chem Eng is my dilemma!

You can do research as an Engineering student.

so you would say Chem Eng with Biotech option just to be solid if grad school doesnt work out?

Yes, Chemical Engineering has much better job and career prospects than Biochemistry at the bachelor’s degree level. Graduate study and research is certainly possible with either major.

Yes. (10 char)
