If my parents went to college in other countries and I'm the first to go in America, am I considered 1st gen?

No. Only consider first generation if your parents have never attended college.

It doesn't matter where they went to college; you're not first generation.

However you are a first-generation AMERICAN, which is pretty unique and can be a cool essay topic.

:)

How bout if they went to college but got something that only equates to a 2 year degree in America?

An associates degree is still college, thus making you not first generation.

I put down I was in one app. I hope it's not a big deal but then again colleges will not be able to prove it anyway =)
So is 1st gen really rare and can it be a hook?

I doubt its a hook but I'm sure it makes you somewhat more attractive.

what if your parents went to one semester of college then left? lol just wondering..

^^In addition to that, does community college or those little technical institutes count?

Petlee, I'm sure you'd never consider lying but given your last statement (colleges can't prove it anyway), I'd like to give you this perspective:

What if you got into your dream school, and someone with identical stats (who didn't self-identify as first generation) did not? Wouldn't that nag at you for the rest of your life?

As to the other questions - one semester of college, etc. - I can't say... I'm sure someone can tell us definitively though.
