I was never interested in applying to Emory or Oxford. I just didn't like Atlanta. A friend of mine told me to apply so I applied. It turns out that I got waitlisted from my first choice, and I am currently considering Emory or Oxford. I have already been accepted to Oxford. Can someone tell me what is good about Oxford?

If you are not really interested in either campus or the city I would advise you really reconsidering attending Oxford. It is a smaller college than Emory and more rigorous. It really has a nice feel to it, however I am biased and love both Emory and Atlanta.

what's wrong with Atlanta? everyone seems to say it's a fantastic city... lots of opportunities

You should already know that oxford is two years. 750 total students, so 375 per class. much easier to get into. supposedly, the classes are a bit tougher. much more intimate atmosphere, able to know professors extremely well, easy to do research with them. easier to get leadership positions in campus organizations.
the campus is fine-looking, but nothing impressive like the atlanta campus. lots of trees and well kept buildings. The buildings are all pretty "normal." The entire campus is basically just one ring of maybe 15 buildings. There is a brand new dorm being built and will be ready by fall.
people there are very friendly, though i did not find them crazy smart or exceptional in any way. they're pretty "normal" people, once again. supposedly the social atmosphere is much more amiable compared to main campus. There is no doubt that there is a fair share of underage drinking at both campuses.

plus, oxford is about 10k cheaper.

ps what was your first choice?

my first choice....u JOHNC613 got into....its WashU....im so jealous....ahhhh....
the reason that I do not like Atlanta is that I heard that there are a lot of gangs....also...i also heard that Oxford was easier to get in and is a lot easier than Emory....so which one is harder in school wise...oxford or emory...

ahhhhh: The area of Atlanta that Emory is located in is called Druid Hills; if there are gangs there, it's probably competing over Gucci bags (LOL)....See if you get in and then visit; my d prefered Emory over Wash U after visiting both(of course, she may not get into either since she was already waitlisted at the latter).....

.......and to add to the mix, not sure if you applied, but she liked Vanderbilt asthetically better than Em or WU.....

YOu definitely wouldn't have to worry about gangs in Oxford. Believe me.I 've been there. I'm like 2 hours away. And Oxford is like 30 min. from ATL.

When do we get our admissions from Emory?
The date?
RD applicant
(SAT score mth 710, CR 770, GPA 3.88 - what do you think are my chances??)

i don't think gangs are an issue anywhere...

RD i think is at the very end of this month...
giajale, SAT is great, GPA is so-so, but there is no way to chance without more info.

"so which one is harder in school wise...oxford or emory..."
they say that emory is harder to get into, but oxford is harder to stay. emory has definitely had more competitive admissions in the past (but this mmay change in the future, or at least the gap may narrow). supposedly oxford has harder classes

my GPA is 3.88/4.0 before midyears and a full 4.0/4.0 after them. But my school is going to send my midyear report on Monday (they're really jeopardizing my career!).

this monday? that's uh... kinda late.. as in they probably already made they're decision about you

I know that.
But I couldn't do anything - my finals are going on and my school is very slow. I had to make the report myself finally!!!
And god knows if my counselor will be in school tomorrow...:(

I can assure you that gangs are not a problem in the area that Emory is nestled in, and furthermore, they're really not a problem in Atlanta (especially when placed in comparison to most large American cities). From my experience of going to a not-so-great public school in the suburbs on the southside, I can tell you that if anything, there are quite a few suburban kids that pose no serious danger to society that claim gang sets. That being said, there are some rough neighborhoods in Atlanta as with any other city. As long as you stay smart, you'll be fine.

HAHA! :) dudeeeeeee, i live in snellville (the name is enough) which is a few miles from the A and there are kids that claim to be "hood". it's quite...laughable.

Atlanta is dangerous in some areas, but Emory is in one of these. Even if it was, a little common sense goes a long way, and the chances of becoming a random crime victim is very low.

I'm guessing you mean to say Emory isn't in one of these areas?

Pretty much all major universities in large cities have the paradox of having wealthy beautiful surroundings, but only a mile or two away live poor, seedy areas. mzeasy and acarey are right. With a little common sense, there's extremely little chance you'll have any problem with crime.

Atlanta is often ranked as among the most dangerous U.S. cities, but the vast majority of the problems are isolated from Druid Hills area, and random violence is more news fear mongering than reality.

Though if it's not just the crime rate, but that you just want a really small town feel, Oxford is perfect for that.
