What's it like?

Just got back from SSU and he loved it. Paid the $1000 deposit for housing as well. He had some excellent private school choices and also was considering U. of Oregon but Sonoma had the "total package" as he stated. Beautiful campus, excellent facilities, (Charles Schultz Library, athletic center, apartment style dorms, etc.), and the right size for him. He was also very happy to learn about the Hutchins Liberal Arts GE program which he is going to do. Seminar style classes with 14 students. We are very happy that he found what he was looking for and he said after he finishes his GE LA program if they don't have the major he wants he can transfer at that point.
Finally I can get some sleep!

YAY!!!

I'm so excited to know that someone besides me from CC is going there. :) I hope he's very happy there, maybe we'll get to meet up once classes start!

What's campus culture like?

It's not incredibly diverse, but most of the students are VERY friendly and have good school spirit (ie lots of "school spirit wear" even among the upperclassmen, you can tell people want to be there).

I LOVE IT HERE. The only thing I don't love is the slight lack of diversity, which I'm not used to being from LB.

A mom here! DS is applying to SSU as well as a number of other private LAC's, but it sounds like SSU would be a great option at a fraction of the cost.

HGFM, did you consider any privates? I've read a lot of your posts, and it sounds as if you've loved SSU from the start. Are you in the LA school there? We're in Sherman Oaks, so I am a little concerned that the school will empty on the weekends.

cpeltz-I considered Westmont and BIOLA as well as Colorado Christian. But aside from my parents not being able to afford private undergrad and help me pay for grad school, something about SSU just "felt" better than a private school.

I'm in the School of Social Sciences, but one of my suite mates is in the LA school.

It doesn't get too empty on the weekends. Yes, a lot of people leave, but there's lots of stuff to do. It seems like there are always organized events...Residential Students Association goes to great lengths to make sure that those of us "stuck" in the dorms unable to go home every other week has things to do.

The thing I love most about SSU is the professors. Since SSU is a non-researching University, the professors are here to actually teach, and they really care about the students. Several times when I have gone to office hours with a question, they have actually talked to me, asking me about how it's going, where I'm from, etc. The small class sizes aren't bad, either. In fact, I just had my midterm conference with my English professor, and she actually remembered enough of what I'd done to refer to one of my papers without even looking at it.

Sonoma State is my #1 choice, it's an excellent state school in an amazing area. I've been there twice, on both a guided and self guided tour and I have recieved nothing but good things from that school. All the people there are so nice, and the second you step on campus you felt like the stress just melts away, like this is where home is.

There's a lot to do on campus and in the surrounding cities, and the dorms are amazing, kind of similar to apartments.

Ask any questions, if you wish!

Thanks to both of you! S has submitted his application to the LAC at SSU, and we plan to make a trip up north in early spring to visit SSU. It's hard to tell from the website if the LAC is similar to a private LAC. Do the students in that program love it?

Does anyone have anything bad to say about SSU?

I've tried to search, but I can't find anything, I've only heard positive things about this school.
