I'm very interested in Sonoma State because I love California and it is away from L.A. Does anyone know how it is?

Nice campus with a great rec center, one of the better Cal States academically. Not much to do in town. Good weather. Huge dorms. Social life is mediocre for most since it empties out on the weekends. Only 40 minutes from San Francisco.

I got accepted there too and have talked to about 10-15 current students. They all said to get involved in the greek life, figs, or clubs. That's the solution to the social life issue there. SF is less than an hour away too.

I'm visiting tomorrow; it's where I'm going for sure. :)

I have a few friends with older siblings there and they all love it.

Please post what you thought of the campus, etc. when you get back. I will be there 4/9.

It was INCREDIBLE.

It's very small, and all the academic buildings are very close together, which is nice. The dorms were beautiful...everything was just perfect. :) But then, I've been in love with SSU since I applied.

Was this your first visit? Did you talk to any students about the social life? I've heard mixed reviews as far as things to do. Did you see Cotati or the area around there? Thx!

I went up there in December as well, but the campus was closed for Winter Break so it was pretty much a ghost town.

I didn't talk to any students because it's their Spring Break so most everyone is gone, but the tour guide told us that there are a lot of clubs and such that organize events on the weekend, and there's lots of stuff to do in Cotati.

If it helps, I have a friend whose older sister goes to Sonoma, and she said she loves it. She also said that the social life is great, if you're proactive about it. Kinda like High School, eh?

Cool, thanks. Where do you live? When I visit school will be in session so that will be good.

I live in Southern California, so SSU is about an 8-hour drive away.

I'm in San Diego so I think it's about 9-10 hour drive. What did you think of Cotati, Rhonert Park and Santa Rosa?

I didn't go to Santa Rosa, but I loved both Cotati and Rohnert Park.

From what I've heard, though, Santa Rosa is much more "big-city" if you want that and it's not far away.

Rohnert Park was my favorite...everyone was very friendly to me, and I love all the mom-and-pop stores/restaurants. I could easily see myself living there (I'm so tired of the big city).

Hi - Our son is looking at SSU too. He is going to decide between SSU and U. of Oregon. Enjoyed reading your thread.

Good luck to your son, SDMom! :)

Thank you! I pray he likes it. Fortunately for you they have your area of interest. Our son is interested in Media/Graphic arts (don't have), maybe communications (have), or Journalism (don't have). We are going during our spring break to visit so we'll see. Fortunately they will be in session then.

One of my friends was able to create her own major at SSU...you might want to explore that option if you can. :) Maybe talk to the administration while you're there.

Thank you for the info. I actually called the Art Dept. last Thursday and left a message but no one called me back. I will email or call Admin. or talk to them when we go.

They had spring break last week, which could be why you haven't gotten a callback yet. :) I don't know for sure though, since I was able to get a tour on Wednesday.

Yes, you are right but someone in the dept. answered so maybe just the students were off. I'll try again this week.

Good luck! :)

You're probably right...when I was on my tour the guide stated that a lot of the departments were still open should we want to drop by and talk to them.
