Whats my shot at Yale, Brown, Dartmouth...

kk guys. please try to be as legitimate as possible. I really would like to know what my chances are. My colleges are:

Brown, Dartmouth, Colombia, Yale are basically my reaches
i haven't really thought about any safeties or matches really (briefly about maybe Tufts, Amherst, and binghamton as major safety) so if any of you can give me some good schools for physics or chemistry, but for a kid who wants to learn a broad range of topics that would be great.

gpa : probably around 3.9 now after junior year most likely top 10%

SAT score:
740 Critical Reading
790 Math
740 Writing 12 essay

2270 total

ACT score:
33 im not sure if i should send it, probably not

SAT II scores:
770 Chemistry
750 Math 1

APs:
AP euro : 3
AP stat : 4
AP US : idk hopefully 5 but probably 4
AP Chem : 5
AP composition : 4

next year will be taking:
AP physics
AP literature
AP economics
AP government
AP calculus BC

umm EC and awards i'll just put together since i have a basic activities list that i jotted down...i havent really compiled everything but I'll do a kind of broad little description with the most important stuff:

Tri-M Music Honor Society
Spanish Honor Society
National Honor Society
Varsity Bowling – All County, been on varsity all years so far
Baseball - played JV for 3 years, not great but i enjoy it
Quiz Bowl – Treasurer, will be president next year
Volunteer- at local Temple tutoring and helping in office (a lot of hours probably 150+....will be doing again this year)
Poetry Award published Spring, 2008(will be sending in some poetry....i consider myself relatively talented)
volunteering at democratic committee in my county over summer and continued into fall until election....maybe further(2-3 times a week, 8 hour day)
Band/Jazz Band/Pit Band
Cancer Walkathon
Music In the Parks – First place
Berkley Jazz Festival
Levittown Music Festival
Academic Achievement for Band
Pit Band for school play
Graduation Band
I play the trumpet and will be sending in a tape with a one or two pieces...hopefully that will be a hook

I have a few awards for trumpet as well...nothing phenomenal like all state but have made all county a few times

that is some of the major things....please be as honest as possible... i want to see where i stack up for my reaches...and maybe some other colleges i should be looking at... thanks a lot for all who read this

You are going to need one more SAT II for some of your ivy league choices. You have ok ECs.
Trust me, because I have already asked: your trumpet playing will not be a hook.

I think you have good chances for your listed schools. Try doing a Counselor-O-Matic college matching search on Princeton Review to find some safety schools for your intended major (The search results actually come up as safeties, matches, and reaches according to your date!)

thanks for reading. I chose these colleges because they only require two sat II’s…i know harvard and princeton require 3 but im not going to be applying there. thanks for the info about princeton review

I am pretty sure Yale requires two, though…

Can you chance me now!

bump…come on guys anyone want to help???

bump…cmon 54 views and only one person responded…can anyone give me there opinion??

High Reach on Yale, Reach on Brown and Columbia, Lower Reach on Dartmouth

Okay, here’s the thing to know about the Ivies: it’s all about rank

What I mean by that is the Ivies usually pick the top 3% of any high school’s class, except for those attending the very top prep schools. Accordingly, this is where you need to be. Your test scores are definitely good enough for the schools you’ve mentioned, so the GPA/rank and the ECs are the areas to work on (if it’s not already too late). You should be looking to be not just top 10%, but rather top 3% to 5% (and only 5% because you say you are at a top school). You should also be considering what leadership/academic competitions you can put on the applications–for example president of clubs or competions like math, science, or debate.

At this point, if you are only top 10%, then these are all reaches, but I think it’s more likely that you (if you have a 3.9 GPA) are closer to top 4% or so. If this is the case, then you are a match for Brown, a slight reach at Dartmouth and Columbia, and a reach for Yale.

In my view, Brown is the Ivy you should concentrate on trying to get into. Study all you can about the school, and when you write your essay make sure you get some of these items that are important to you into your essay. Also, check with your school and see if they put rank on the transcript. If so, see if it counts honors/IB/APs, because most don’t. If they don’t, mention what your rank would be if this was considered–try to get it from the school, or estimate it as best as possible.

As far as other schools, consider Tufts and Amherst, but also consider honors programs at more “regular colleges”, like Penn State or a school with great science programs like Swarthmore. Also, consider well-known “chemistry” schools, like Duke and UC Santa Barbara-or even Rice. Also, consider Tulane if you want to do research on public health issues or tropical diseases. Ohio State and Baylor also have great medical schools–and taking science courses at one of these and doing research at that center as an undergraduate would help a lot in getting into a good medical school program later on.

Good luck.

You’re pretty solid. Nothing spectacular but very good in everything! I think you’re slight reaches for Brown, Dartmouth and Columbia. If your essays and interviews go better then solid then I’d say you’re maybe even a match for those 3. For Yale, regardless of how good your stats, interview, ECs etc its a crapshoot. Sorry but thats what it’s like at HYPS. If you like Chemistry + Physics why not add another reach in the form of MIT/Caltech?

I think you will find that most people interested in science will have taken the Math 2 subject test.

youre a very strong applicant. dont forget safeties though - the ivy leagues really screwed kids over this year, so you cant be too sure.

you have no shot! u should have gotten a 2350 on the sat at the very least. also your gpa isn’t that great.

and u got a 3 on the ap euro exam??? pssah that was the easiest ap…

calcruzer : thanks for the informative post. I could very well be top 3 of 4 percent i was just estimating. I will definitly look at some of those other schools.

shore : thanks. I am hoping to have really good essays and rec’s

Hunt : I thought that was only engineering. I do not plan to go directly into a science as a major as soon as i get to a school. I want to feel around a little and look at some other majors like Political Science and business

radionowhere : Thanks. I was at a 2110 before the June SAT so I guess that really helped out my strength as an applicant when i got the 2270.

DevilKnight : haha. if you knew me you would know that I am not an overachiever and am not obsessed with grades. Don’t get the wrong impression here man.

oh its u again ivyhopeful…i was pulling ur strings!

haha yea…all good devilknight…
