sure they are. every single person I know who's applied out has gotten into a top school--not one exception. (of course, if for any reason they thought their stats were questionable they probably wouldn't apply out in the first place)

several also apply for competitive fellowships out of college and win them--two of the last four rhodes scholarship winners at brown were PLME's, the first of which is now back at Brown Med finishing her MD. several people in my medical school class did fulbrights before starting and one was a marshall scholar. another got his JD at Harvard before coming back. at least empirically, PLME's seem to be very highly looked upon and sought after.

not by the people at brown, which is obviously what I meant. They made a committment to brown, and applying out is very dishonorable.

Espescially when you walk around telling people you plan on applying out, but you have brown as your safety....

eh, other pre-meds are jealous of PLME's from the get-go (and reasonably so--it's such a bottleneck to get into any medical school, let alone Brown's)--they're not specifically looked down on for applying out.

from a student perspective, if anything, they're respected more for suffering through the application process (which sucks in itself) like everyone else. the thing is though, PLME's don't self-identify as a cohort at Brown, so if you're in a pre-med class you rarely know who the PLME's are unless you're good friends with them

from an adminstrative point of view, they are very supportive if you think another place would meet your needs best.
