PLME Question

Hey there,

I was accepted into Brown PLME and am trying to decide where to go.

My question is: If I enroll at Brown and the PLME program, am I allowed to apply to other medical schools for after the undergrad?
Or is the program 8 years binding?

Thanks!

You are allowed to apply out, but if you do you risk sacrificing your spot at Brown med (they reserve the right to re-evaluate you like other med schools would).

Stueydue,

Congrats!

My child was accepted to PLME too!

 1. We are from Bay Area, CA. Where are you from?
 2. Did you receive the addtional information regarding your acceptance to PLME, as it’s mention in the acceptance letter?
 3. Will you plan to go to ADOH?

Thanks!

Hmm, I always thought PLME was non-binding and you could apply out while keeping your spot. They’re just not that specific on their website because they want people who stay in the program. Then again, modestmelody knows more than me about the process.

Congrats to you both!

schrizto-- my understanding is it is rarely a problem because students who want to apply out are not the students who are borderline to get into Brown med school typically. However, IIRC, the policy at some point recently was that if you apply out they reserve the right to re-evaluate your undergraduate performance beyond the minimum requirements to stay in the program and they also will look at your MCAT score.

Again, I think it rarely (possibly never) kicks into effect, however I do believe this is the policy in order to deter people from applying out.

An aside, separate from many other things I really don’t like about PLME, as scary as I know that it is, I really think if we’re going to have the program it should be 100% binding. Don’t apply to PLME if you don’t truly want to be a doctor and be a doctor at Brown. There are so many kids out there busting their ass for that opportunity that I really think that some people come here and treat PLME acceptance the same as Brown acceptance is a huge shame. That being said, not many people apply out. I don’t know the exact numbers, but if I had to estimate, I’d say no more than 5 or so people apply out each year.

I agree with modestmelody-the one exception however should be for people wanting to apply to their state medical schools-only for the obvious financial reasons.
