I know it has a strong reputation and connections in the Dallas Metroplex, but what about its reputation say in Austin, or in San Antonio? Are other schools, such as Texas-Austin, more reputable in those areas?

I think SMU will help you get jobs in Dallas or Houston. In Austin, it depends on the field I guess. Austin is a tech town and UT’s comp-sci is better than SMU’s so I’m guessing they’ll keep UT grads around. I know someone who graduated from SMU and eventually found a job in Austin because he really wanted to live there but he could have had an easier time finding one in Dallas.

Yea, I’m mainly looking at Dallas, possibly San Antonio, Houston is sort of last preference I guess…but definitely Dallas or Austin.

But I’m a business major so Austin probably is not a good choice?

You will be ahead of the pack if you graduate with a business degree from SMU. In Dallas it has a very strong alumni base and is highly regarded. In Central Texas, Baylor is regarded as the best. In Austin, UT is regarded as the best. In San Antonio, Baylor, SMU, RICE, UT are pretty much in the same league. In Houston, Rice is the best followed by UT, then Baylor, then SMU.

^Seriously, Crown, you can’t go wrong in Texas with a degree from SMU. It’s widely recognized as a very good school. It doesn’t really matter which is “the best,” right? Particularly, since perception of “the best” WILL vary from person to person. I can assure you … you can’t go wrong with SMU. (Or Rice, or Baylor, or UT)

Where does TCU fit into the mix?

You really can’t go wrong in Texas with a degree from Cox. Everyone here respects what a strong business school that it is, and our national connections exceed those of many of our neighbors.

Rice- I would say that TCU is a little bit less known and regarded than SMU or Baylor. They are primarily recognized because of their sports programs. TCU is still a good school, but I would say it is not quite as strong as the other two. I hope this helps.
