my school offers symantec for free but I heard it slows down your computer significantly. Is this true? If so what other options are avaliable?

Try AVG free version. I am assuming you have a PC, not a Mac. AVG is great.

I use avast and that seems to work well enough; I haven’t gotten any viruses.

AVG 10 char.

The free symantec my school gave me didn’t like my computer. I’ve used AVG and avast and was fine with both.

I use ZenOK [Free Antivirus](<a href=“http://freeantivirus.zenok.com/"]Free”>http://freeantivirus.zenok.com/) and I like it. this is apparently a good choice and I had it for a while but it does the jod and its simoke. I go with ZenOK its pretty good (and free)

AVG is, without a doubt, the top free antivirus software out there. I use it on my PC at home.

AVG 10char

AVG used to be good until they released AVG 11. Now it’s slow, has a horrible interface (just my opinion), and is bundled with software that could cause damage to your registry if not treated correctly. There have also been reports that it caused 64-bit systems to become nonbootable, and the newest version also has tons of conflicts with MBAM, which is a popular antimalware program.

Some of the top ones nowadays is Avast (which I use - got rid of AVG a couple months ago), Avira, and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Microsoft Security Essentials.

The best anti-virus is common sense. Viruses and malware rely on the stupidity of the user. All you have to do is practice safe browsing habits, and avoid file sharing. Personally, I never got a virus/trojan/ or anything like that except from fake torrents and downloading software that was offered to me for free.

I used avg for a while but have switched to microsoft security essentials. Both are good.

AVG has declined.
Avast is now the top, IMO.

Any software for macs?

There are anti-virus programs for Macs, but since viruses and malware are generally aimed towards Windows, so common sense should be enough. Meaning, don’t go downloading stuff from untrusted sources, don’t go surfing sketchy website.

If you have a windows OS get the free Microsoft Security Essentials. It works great.
