Whats the best part about going to Miami University?

What's the best part about going to Miami University: the people, sports, social life, etc...?

D’s response, “Everything!”

As a student here, honestly everything is absolutely amazing here. Not only is the campus stunning, but the classes, professors, parties, and students are are so great. I am a work hard, play hard person and this university is perfect for that. Students here definitely love to go out a lot and have a great time but everyone studies as well (well most people do). I literally wake up and think about how grateful I am for this place because I couldn’t see myself anywhere else. Come visit and see if you feel like you’d like it here because once I stepped foot on campus for a visit, I knew I’d come here.

Very pretty campus in a middle of nowhere was one of the biggest attractions for my D. Also, if some of you are not aware (we definitely did not pay attention and did not know this fact), Miami is ranked #3 in the country in undergraduate teaching, down from #2. Yes, it is beating Harvard and tons of other top schools in this ranking. D. did not have a single class taught by TA. All lectures were given by profs. In fact one of her classes was taught by 3 profs being in the classroom at every lecture, each lecturing on his part of the class. Another huge attraction is the Miami is very well known for awesome Merit packages to top students mostly funded thru private donations. Apparently huge alumni base, people who are well off enough and feel good about their UG school. Well, in D’s case, she had good choice of Med. Schools to attend after graduation, but this depends on your intended field of study. In regard to social life, Greek is huge, places to go out are great, even campus food is very good. Sports - if you are into hockey, football is not big there. Rec. center is awesome though.

Hi! Could you write a little more about the pre-med experience at Miami? What med schools did your daughter get accepted? Where are you from? We are in Florida and want a curriculum that is do-able for the scores med schools require. What about research/ volunteer opportunities? I have a son who attended Notre Dame, went to Mayo for med school, and now is at Hopkins. What does Miami offer? Thank you so much!!!

Most pre-meds are Zoology major at Miami. Miami Zoology department is one of the higher ranked in a country. Zoology major is very demanding. However, many pre-meds are having double majors, combos of major/minor(s). Research internship was very easy to obtain. Maybe it was timing, but my D. had no luck at other places. At Miami, all it took was email to person in charge, then interview and then she was in for about 3 years. It was great, in her area of interest, doing close to what she was doing previously while in HS during summers, she loves working with rodents. They had presentation at the end. She also was given a chance to write grant proposals herself and was able to obtain them based on her proposal. Again, great LOR from person in charge. All her friends had great choices of Med. Schools. However, none applied to Mayo, JHU. D. was actually in combined bs/md, which is cancelled at Miami. So, she had a spot at U of Cinci before she decided to apply out (she was the only person in her program who did). She got into 3 more Med. Schools, 2 were in top 20 at that time and she is currently MS2 at one of them. All her pre-med friends who applied with her are in Med. Schools, but they mostly applied to schools close by. We are in OH. In regard to volunteering, it was also few year commitment. But D’s volunteering was in area of her personal interest and it was unusual for pre-med, she was only one pre-med there, the others were pschology major. She had additional volunteering experiences back home during summer, but they were also much harder to get into. Everyhting at Miami seems to be easy to obtain, she was also working there for 3 years. In regard to scores, as you probably aware, it is more up to a student. Both GPA and MCAT require hard work. Miami starts its pre-meds very quickly. The first BIO (BMZ) is a weed out killer. Everybody is advised to take it, no matter what was AP Bio score. Overall, looking back and having visited other places, D. is thinking of Miami as the place that matched her the best with life long memories and very positive experiences. She was also in Honors (2 years ago they had only 200 spots). Sorority experience was also very positive, she is a big buddy to one of her sorority sisters who is MS1 at her Med. school.
Visiting Miami makes her always very happy. PM if you have additional, more detailed questions.
