Miami florida vs. Miami ohio

Visited both schools

what are the pros and cons of each and which do you prefer?

do you just want to go to a school named miami?

They're very different schools, although they're comparable academically (the difference between #54 and #60 on US News is negligible and probably a result of U Miami's location). U Miami was never on my list (I'm not a fan of hot weather, beaches, or a huge party scene), but obviously it's located in an urban area. Miami U is located in a small town in a fairly rural area. I love Miami U because the focus is really on undergraduates; I've had a lot of opportunities that I probably wouldn't have at other schools. The acceptance rates at law/med/grad school are phenomenal. Study abroad is also very popular-- nationally, 3% of students study abroad, while 30-35% study abroad at Miami U. What did you like about each school?

Miami ohio had a nice campus and a homey feel
Miami sent me cards and things thanking me for visiting and congratulating me on my SAT and ACT scores.

Miami florida has a good pre med program and med school
Fla has good weather and location

Probably get a scholarship from both if I attended

I see you are an Ohio resident so you will be considered an out of state applicant for miller med school and you wont receive a secondary unless you have a 3.6gpa or higher.

MiamiU prepares us premeds pretty well for medical school and around 90% of us get in as long as we have a gpa >3.2 and a minimum of 8 on each subsection of the MCAT. Plus, the state schools here in ohio really like our school evident by the number of applicants they accept each year i.e. at OSU, miami is either the second or third most represented school there year in and year out. Also, we have dual admission programs with Toledo med and UC med school - further proof that ohio state schools respect the rigorous curriculum here for premeds.

I think you should pick wherever you feel like you will have the best time for the next four years; both schools are great choices.

If you have any specific Q's about anything just ask away.

UM is way more expensive and doesn't have a huge greek life like MU, I live in Hollywood which isn't very far from UM, coral gables itself isn't all that great, but nearby south beach and other parts of dade, broward, and palm beach county have a lot to offer-it's pretty to easy to get around since the tri-rail connects the counties. I've heard that it's pretty hard to get out of oxford?
I've only visited Ohio, and have never seen MU but I am applying to both anyway.

A big plus is it doesn't get cold in sofla...

We took tours of both campuses. As a parent, I preferred Miami University. Freshmen and sophomores have to live on campus. It's definitely a college town (but it's small.) Everyone was very friendly and the campus was beautiful. U of Miami's campus wasn't very attractive and the dorm they showed us was absolutely horrible, with hurricane shutters over all the windows. It was like a dungeon. The tour guide explained that they don't evacuate for hurricanes. Instead, eveyone on campus holes up in that one dorm. They had a bar right on campus by the food court. U of Miami greeks were having some type of charitable event with a few dozen young children. I felt sorry for the kids because very few of the students were interacting with the kids.
Our tour guide talked about commuting to campus, but couldn't answer my question about the percentage of commuters. I have a feeling it's significantly higher that Miami University. U of Miami does run a shuttle bus to a couple of places, including the beach, which was nice. Athletic teams are better at U of Miami.

Thanks Toledo for posting a visit comparison for these two schools. My S is applying to both Miami's. We toured Miami Ohio, S/me/dad all liked it a lot. Have not visited U Miami, we will consider visit if S gets in, he applied EA. Not impressed with what I'm finding out about U Miami online. Similar percent students living on campus (42-47% depending on where you look for U Miami, 47-48% Miami Ohio). But for being the more selective school, U Miami doesn't fare as well for freshman retention (87% U Miami, 90% Miami Ohio) or students graduating within 4 years and 6 years ( 53%/71% for U Miami, 67%/81% for Miami Ohio).

My daughter just finished her first semester at Miami Ohio. She is pre-med, zoology major (she heard that it is one of the best in a country) and she is part of Dual Admission Program with UC College of Medicine. She was surprised how challenging some classes are, which we consider a plus. She absolutely loves it there and all her friends love it also. She is not part of greek life, she lives in Tappan which is honors dorm. Club sports are big and very affordable, food is voted one of the best of any campus in US. It is not just academic, D is having nice time and made a lot of freinds. They also offer amazing financial package, which you get sometime in March. D is very happy with her choice of Miami Ohio although it was #2 on her list. Good luck to all in choosing a good match.

Miami U has one of the biggest party scenes of any college anywhere. Much bigger than UMiami.

Just a heads up.

Miami University in Ohio is a better school overall than Miami (FL) as well as a better social scene. It depends on what you want but Miami (OH) seems like the better choice here.
