What's the biggest difference between Exeter and Andover?

I was just wondering...

Red and Blue

Dark and gloomy v. beautiful and bright!

mass and new hampshire
hello hazmat

Hi there! Hey, it is that time again?

yes sir it is..........I'm now in the midst of the final child applying to boarding school. I think I like it better when none of my kids are applying.

hey your wealth of knowledge, persevearance and total belief in the goal will pull it all through. I know it is a testy time. YIKES and you aren't even the one going! Hey.......you add lots here. Always glad to chime in if I have a piece to offer. Best of luck to your kiddo.

thanks hazmat.

Good karma from all of those you have helped and supported here will go with your student into the right class with that glorious opportunity and you will puff with pride.....well will all applaud.

A few differences...
Exeter - Harkness method for all classes, dress code, smaller campus, considered more nerdy
Andover - more conventional class set-ups, no dress code, more bucolic and spread out campus, less strict school rules

**less strict school rules

**

Both schools separate students each year.

Agree with Senioritis' assessment of the two schools.

Andover some what more diverse, higher percentage of students on financial aid, although Exeter has been increasing this lately.

Also more student independence at Andover, for better or worse.

Exeter has more Saturday classes, and more total class meeting days, than Andover. Due to this and Andover's greater proximity to Boston, Andover students are more likely to leave campus for Boston and other destinations on the weekends. Again, for better or worse, depending on your point of view.

Andover some what more diverse

According to each school's website, Exeter has 38% students of color and Andover has 34%.

There are different kinds of diversity, not just ethnic and racial. For example there is financial diversity.

While there are differences, the biggest is they're about 25 to 30 miles apart.

Not exactly.

Exeter says "38 percent of us are ethnically diverse", which is not the same as "of color"

Looking at the numbers, Exeter's figure must include the international students. This is a reasonable definition of "ethnically diverse", so it is an honest statement, but Andover is not including the internationals in its "34% students of color".

Exeter
"The Financial Aid Initiative aims to raise $70 million, which will provide an additional $3 million to the financial aid budget on a yearly basis. This will allow Exeter to move the percentage of students on aid from roughly 34 percent each year to 40 percent and to accept all of the best qualified students."
http://phillips.exeter.edu/ei/initiatives/financial.html

"the school increased its financial aid budget to $10 million for next year, up from $8.5 million." http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2006/04/18/costly_boarding_schools_offer_more_aid/

Andover "Financial assistance:
Financial Aid (scholarships and/or loans):
Recipients, 449 students (41%) "

" Total financial assistance $12,193,000"
http://www.andover.edu/about_andover/facts.htm

I guess the bottom line is that both Exeter and Andover have a very diverse student body, especially in comparison to many other boarding schools (there seem to be quite a few where students of color make up less than 20%--sometimes less than 10%--of the student body).

Exeter has no grade inflation.... Andover does
