Whats the campus like?

Hows the georgetown campus? And what kinds of shops/places are nearby? And are the crime rates high there?

if you go to the georgetown forum and put "campus" into the search tool you'll get all the previous posts about the campus, which answers all of your questions except for what the crime rate is. the link for the campus search is http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search.php?searchid=4496021

the campus, in one word, is amazing. It has a complete and relatively secluded campus complete with grass, trees, flowers, parks, everything, but yet is still in the Georgetown neighborhood of DC, and is right by the river.
Georgetown, the neighborhood, is loaded with awesome boutiques and restaurants, but is kinda high-end as far as prices go....its amazingly cute thought, I believe the crime rate in this specific area of DC is low (not positive tho).
hope that helps!

When I went to visit and I went up to the roof of Village A you knew this was the campus. You are in a nice enviorment in metropolitan. Best of both worlds combined into one school. BEAUTIFUL VIEW and seems like a great place to have parties

ok, when i first saw gtown, it looked like hogwarts from across the river, and i am totally NOT joking. it was awesome. there was mist on the river, the sun was setting, a crew was rowing; my view of it was like an epiphany or revelation. ahhh....sooooo beautiful

Crime rate is an interesting question. It's not the safest area, but compared to the rest of DC it's better. We get reports about people getting mugged and stuff, but if you just follow general things like don't walk around alone late at night and you'll be okay. The Department of public safety has had a bigger presence on campus recently and definitely watches out for us a lot, with officers stationed at the entrances to campus. The risk of crime shouldn't keep you away from Georgetown, but it is definitely something to be aware of when you come.
Oh and campus is amazing. it's the best home you could ever have.

When I read the campus visit reports, there weren't any that I saw that
were able to get in to see a dorm room. Do they not want you to see
the dorms? Are they that bad?

No i have heard that they are pretty good. There are some apartment style ones that overlook the potomac...::sigh::

I asked my interviewer the same question. I thought it was suspicious they didn't show us freshman dorms. The interviewr said that the dorms are reletively new and have AC in all of them and are great living conditions, based on what she knows. Of course this is freshman dorms. I think upperclass have a chance at townhouses in the surrounding area. Again you have not seen great view of DC until you see it ontop of Village A. SEE IT.

My interviewer told me that every incoming Freshmen wants a certain dorm (I forget the exact one), and all the people that don't get it are really dissappointed, but then a week later everybody is happy where they ended up because they have met so many new friends.

The dorms are good. We don't show you a freshman dorm because there is security in each of the dorm buildings and taking a huge group of random people in to see a room would be difficult. I went on a lot of campus tours and only a few let us see a dorm room, so I don't think it's that rare.

i know this is counting my chickens before they hatch, but what is the best freshman dorm?

That's fairly typical. Of all the colleges I visited, only one let us see a dorm. It's more about the disruption than the quality of the dorms. There's an awful lot of tours to have each one walk through freshman housing while people are living there.

If you can find a freshman while visiting, you could probably get them to sign you in to their dorm. They'll also let you tour them during GAAP weekend.

There's no generally accepted best dorm. Darnall is annoyingly far from everything. Village C has private bathrooms, but those aren't particularly necessary and decrease the size of the rest of the room. Harbin/New South probably slightly better for those reasons. I live in New South and have no complaints.

oxi--thanks very much!

Housing is pretty good at Georgetown and keeps getting better as they renovate stuff. Of the freshman dorms Darnall was renovated longest ago in 1996, Harbin in 2000, New South in 2004 and Village C was renovated over the summer this year.

Seeing Georgetown's campus almost made me wish it weren't in DC. I live a 10-minute drive away and volunteer at Georgetown University Hospital, so I'm there a lot, and it's gorgeous. The campus is clearly defined despite being in the city, and there are open spaces where people can study and hang out; it's in a calm neighborhood but a short walk to restaurants and shops (closest to campus on Wisconsin Avenue it's pretty high-end, but around the Wisconsin/M Street intersection a few blocks down it's much more reasonable); and the river view is obviously spectacular. The one downside is that there's no metro station near campus, but the university offers free shuttles to the Dupont Circle metro station every 15 minutes, which is incredibly convenient, and I think there's another one to Rosslyn. You should probably see it for yourself before committing, but I've been impressed with what I've seen so far.

You don't have any choice in which dorm you get, so it doesn't really matter what the best one is. Most people are very happy with whatever they get even if they don't like it at first. I lived in New South and it was fabulous. New South and Harbin are usually regarded as the best two but each has its pros and cons.

Rosslyn really isn't a long walk from campus. Maybe 10 minutes.

so it's not on a first-come, first-serve basis?

What kind of stores and places to shop are there around the campus?
