Incoming freshman here, and I just logged into OneStart to view what books I need to order, and what I thought would be simple was the complete opposite.

Firstly, I have nineteen Books/Computer programs that the website deems "required." That seems outragously huge to me. Is it best to buy these things now, during welcome week, or after the class has already started and we know for sure if we'll actually need them? I've heard of people buying books and later finding out that they aren't required; and usually there's a crappy resale price. So when is the optimal time to buy? And also, if we purchase these once we're on campus, how do we charge them to the Bursar? Do we get a card?

Also, I have one class (BUS-K201) that requires multiple types of software and other things that I have no idea what they are. It requires:

MICROSFT.OFFICE ACCESS 2007 STEP..-W/CD

SUCCEEDING IN BUS.W/MS.OFF.EXCEL 2007

M:INFORMATION SYSTEM (what is this?)

2 GB USB DRIVE

XRC-01 RESPONSECARD (TURNING POINT) (what is this too?)

BUS-K201 COMPUTER BUS.OPER.PKG >CUSTOM<

These look like things I need to install onto my computer. Do these things need to be installed by the first day of class? Or installed at all?

Any information is helpful as this is completely over my head.

First, what class requires 19 computer programs?

Also,

MICROSFT.OFFICE ACCESS 2007 STEP…-W/CD is a book.

SUCCEEDING IN BUS.W/MS.OFF.EXCEL 2007 is a book.

M:INFORMATION SYSTEM (what is this?) is a handbook specially made for the lecture portion of the class

2 GB USB DRIVE is needed, but a specific type is not. If you already have one, you are set.

XRC-01 RESPONSECARD (TURNING POINT) (what is this too?) since the lectures are like 300+ classes, this card is actually like a remote that lets you answer extracredit question and takes attendance. Each one has a number assigned with the student to help the teacher keep track of how students are doing.

BUS-K201 COMPUTER BUS.OPER.PKG >CUSTOM< is the workbook you use.

Also, after K201 is X201. Many of these books also apply to X201 (the response card, and the Access and Excel book, and the USB drive), so really you are preparing for two classes.

I would buy the response card relatively soon. And the Information Systems book. You will need those for the tests. The Computer Bus Operating package will also be used, but you have to wait to buy them since they are custom. You wont wont be able to find them on Amazon or anything. You can probably wait on the Access and Excel book.

Also check IU Classifieds (on onestart) to see if kids from last year are selling the books. K201 books are pretty common.

Can we use the response card for multiple classes? Or do we have to buy one for each? I’m taking m119 first semester and plan to take k201 second semester.

I’m also wondering when to purchase books. I don’t have a schedule of classes yet since I missed the summer one. I will have my orientation on the 23rd and 24th right before Welcome Week. Is it going to be late if I order my books during Welcome Week?
