What's the deal with ED II?

I'm confused about Wash U's ED II. I didn't apply im just curious, from the college's viewpoint why do they have it? Is it any different from normal ED other than the deadline? It seems like kids who like Wash U, but who prefer another school, can apply EA/ED to their top school and if they dont get in can apply ED II to Wash U. I'm assuming thats what most ppl did, but how does it benefit the school to offer this. To answer my own question, I would guess its because they are in the process of establishing themselves as a first tier school and want to accept ED the most highly competitive students...but I wasn't sure. Does anyone else have a better idea or know for sure?

I could be totally wrong, I'm just wondering...

Also how do they read through all the ED II applicants, decide, and let them know in two weeks? It seems ridiculous.

good luck everyone!

Its binding, so its another chance to be guarenteed students. I didnt get into Cornell, so I'm doing ED II
