What's the deal with Subject Tests?

I was thinking of registering late for the Biology and Literature subject tests in October. A lot of people have told me I should take them, but I never really got an answer why. I am applying to UNC Chapel Hill, so I was wondering do they make an application more competitive? I don't plan on taking a math subject test which seems to be the most popular, so does it really matter?

If the colleges/universities on your list don’t require them, don’t take them. Save your money.

If exams are required, check to see if the institution(s) require(s) any specific exams or not. If no specific exam is required, just that you take at least one, then take the exam(s) that you believe you will do best on.

UNC does not require subject tests, and I think there are other factors more important to them- my son was accepted to UNC last year without submitting subject test scores, as was his classmate, who also didn’t submit subject test scores (both applied EA) and were OOS).

Go here for a list of colleges that require, recommend or consider SAT subject tests for admission <a href=“SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations - Compass Education Group”>www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/admissions_req_subjects.aspx UNC is in the “consider” group meaning you do not need to provide any but if you do they will be given some consideration if they help you.

Check the list on this link too:

It is not just require or recommend, it is about what do they use the scores for.
