What's the difference between university honors program and university scholars program in NC state

They seem to have the same criteria, what are the difference between university honors program and university scholars program in NC state? Thank you!

@schoolmother Hi! As a parent of an honors student & speaking on the experience itself: the honors program is more of an immersive learning culture whereas the scholars is extracurricular. The honors students are encouraged to dialogue in the Socratic method and the required honors classes promote intellectual curiosity. If you choose to live in the Honors Village you have the opportunity to develop close friendships with a diverse group of academically minded students. Both programs offer cultural enrichment opportunities for students to participate in as they choose. If you have specific questions I will do my best to answer you.

One big difference is that Honors requires a Capstone project: https://honors.dasa.ncsu.edu/academics/capstone/ This requires some planning and does add some stress during an already busy time. Sometimes students can use a departmental project to fulfill this requirement. Others choose something completely different from their majors.

Thank you very much @Trusting and @NeedAVacation, I appreciate!
My D was accepted into NC State COD. She is very excited about the news but we are OOS and I am wondering what major MERIT based scholarship we can apply to help cover OOS cost? We won’t get any need based scholarship. NC State website got almost 1500 and it would take a lot of time to filter though them one by one. Is there any scholarship for National Merit Finalist?

Honestly, the Honors program makes very little difference in the eyes of Prospective employers. The dorms identified for Honor students are the smallest on campus and most non-honor NCSU students joke that no one wants to stay in them anyway so they put the Honors students in them.

@Schoolmother - Since your D is in CoD & considering honors I wanted to let you know that there is some potential frustration with scheduling the honors seminars with the CoD studios. The studio scheduling sometimes conflicts with the available seminar times. As long as your D is prepared for trying to find workarounds or maybe picking any seminar that fits, it is doable. The Capstone research can overlap with your senior design project.

As far as scholarships -the general scholarship application also has department specific questions so it should cover you for all NCSU scholarships. I would call the financial aid office just to be sure & ask about NMF.

In regards to the Honors Village - yes the dorm rooms are small, but the quiet atmosphere and the park-like environment with a dining hall literally in the backyard make it seem worth it. RE parking is decent as well.

Thank you both!

@Trusting, you mean we only need to fill in one application and we would be considered for all University level and COD level scholarships?

The “Rising Freshman Distinctive Scholarships” required your student to apply by the October 15th deadline: https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/your-money/financial-aid/types/scholarships/ I think some of the departmental scholarships come from this application as well.

There are no scholarships specifically for NMFs, but it’s an honor that probably helps the application.

There other specific scholarships that your student must apply to directly: https://ncsu.academicworks.com/ Your daughter will just have to spend a little time scrolling through to find any she might qualify for.

My daughter was surprised by an almost last-minute scholarship award that really made the difference for her, so it’s worth it for your student to apply to as many scholarships as possible, and then see what happens.

As for living on the Honors Quad, my daughter really liked it, but she likes a quiet living atmosphere. The students in Honors like to have fun, but they take their studies seriously. She said if they party, they go elsewhere to do it. It’s conveniently located, and as Trusting said, having the dining hall right there is very convenient. Some of the Honors seminars are also held in classrooms on the Quad. It’s also adjacent to Pullen Park. Honors does also offer lots of social opportunities.

Thank you @NeedAVacation,

I wish we knew about the “Rising Freshman Distinctive Scholarships” earlier. My D is checking out PACK ASSIST and there are more than a thousands there. It will take a while to filter some out.

Happy New Year!

We are still waiting to hear if accepted into the Honors program and have a quick question that is unclear on the website. If accepted into the Honors program are you guarunteed Honors dorms?

As noted above, scholars is more extracurricular. My son has very much enjoyed the activities and people he’s met through the program. I believe that scholars housing is moving though so check on that for sure.

It’s been a few years, but I seem to remember that dd had to choose non-Honors dorms initially. Then, after she was accepted to Honors, she was able to change her housing preference to Honors dorms. When she was there (she graduated last year), I believe there were enough spaces to accommodate everyone because some non-Honors students were allowed to live there at the request of a roommate. However, that was before the requirement that all freshmen live on campus. The Honors personnel are very responsive to questions. You can always email them your questions.
