-I did not apply to the University of Alabama because I'm an Auburn fan and didn't like the fact that anybody can get in there.
-Didn't apply to any UC schools because I didn't think that my combo of out of state and lack of challenging HS courses would get me in.
-Didn't apply to Bennington because they required a graded analytical essay plus another additional essay that sucked.
-Also skipped out on a ton of good Theatre programs because they were too classical based.

Was accepted to, but did not attend College of the Atlantic because I decided I wanted a "traditional" degree. I am now attending my 2nd college this year(I'm a freshman) and will take myself out of the running for a Bachelor's in fall to pursue a 2 year certificate in Acting for Film/TV at either the NY Conservatory for the Dramatic Arts or Academy of Art University.

I think if everyone analyzed the reasons for or against applying to a school, many of the reasons will be totally subjective. That is what actually makes the most sense. There are many schools that will fit each student. You have to imagine yourself living there, and all of the reasons you guys have cited are real, true, valid reasons. My D wouldn't get out of the car when we visited Brandeis-- she thought it was ugly. I am sure it is a perfectly good school, and many people love it and are hoping to get accepted. To each his own. Or, as I once heard, that is why there are menus in restaurants! :)

Same idea, stargirl. Dickinson was my safety as well, but I don't think I could attend a school whose name drips with incestuous pedophilia.

You're completely right, franglish. It's almost good we don't choose schools for what might be trivial reasons because that's one fewer application to compete with those students who really are set on the school.

But you have to admit that Brandeis IS butt-ugly. I didn't look into it because I couldn't readily pronounce its name.

didnt apply to tufts because i was tired of writing essays and tufts happened to be at the bottom of list of "essays to do" AND it had a lot of essays.
lol you can bet it wasnt my first choice lol

CB did not send my scores to UCB (long and involved story) and wanted
me to pay all over again to have it sent....so I did not apply to UCB after
sending in everything else including the essays whch I worked on for 5 days/

I didn't apply to Cornell because they don't have nursing, which I changed my major to after visiting, but even if they DID I wouldn't apply there because of the DAIRY BAR. Has anyone else visited and been constantly harrassed about visiting the DAIRY BAR before leaving campus? I really really hate milk and to me all I could picture were pints of milk everywhere and it really made me nauseous.

Heres a really dumb one: I didnt apply to SUNY ESF - some environmental school in New York. Reason is because the woman on the viewbook looked funny.

I took Tufts off of my list because I didn't want to do some of their essays. (Im so lazy)

I took off UPenn because I didn't want too many rejections (I kinda wish I applied)

I took off GWU becasue I got into Northeastern EA and kept American on my list (What the-) Oh and thanx for the $3500 in loans American (Do you think I'm made of money???)

i ended up applying to 17 schools...let me go through them all.
Yale: visited it and LOVED it...top choice by far
Duke: sports+academics+parties=awesome time
Dartmouth: wanted another ivy, didn't have a real supplement (i love you paula for filling out my peer recommendation!)
emory: not really sure, i was going through my southern schools craze
vanderbilt: see above
LSU: wanted a rolling school
Bama: THREW money at me
Tulane: close to home in case i wanted to stay here
tufts: close to boston
georgetown: dc, plus the duke reasons
boston college: thought taking religion would be interesting
uchicago: i have no idea. i don't fit their type AT ALL.
umiami: school on the beach, awesome music program
unc: same reason as duke
uva: found it later in my search, loved it
northeastern: i once had 13 on my list and i couldnt apply to 13, so i added one
college of charleston: out of state safety? i dont know

Way back in the day I applied ED and went to Middlebury because (a) skiing, (b) 18 year old drinking age in Vermont, and (c) they let freshmen have cars.

1)I DIDN'T apply to cornell because I read that they have intro to psych classes with over 1,000 students...plus every single nondruggie year (...every couple of years my school has a rash of unintelligent potheads, as opposed to the intelligent ones) half of the top 10% from my school is accepted there. so far 10 of us have been accepted that I've heard of.
2) Didn't apply to uchicago b/c they opened up to the common app this year and i felt like it would be selling out.
3) Didn't finish my app to beloit b/c i read on the website most of its scholarships are given out EA. My friend with lower stats and pretty much the same ECs (she's my club buddy) got accepted w/ a scholarship RD.
4)Didn't apply to American b/c my gf did and I would feel so bad if she were rejected and I were not.
5) Didn't apply to brown b/c they had too many forms.
6) didn't apply to Vassar cause it smelled weird when I went there.

Stupidest reason I DID apply:
1) Applied to UVM b/c they recycle everything - my acceptance letter was printed on recycled paper and it made me smile
2) Binghamton b/c it's everyone's safety suny school (geneseo doesn't have italian).
3) Mount Holyoke - I already applied to Smith and Mt. Holyoke didn't require any money (basically I didn't have to involve my mom. she is trouble in that sense.) I prob should have submitted my SAT scores b/c they're great for that school - 1470/1600.

I applied to Swarthmore, without visiting or knowing anything about it, because there was a guy in my dad's office who went there, and he was cool.

I didn't apply to Williams because they are the purple cows. Okay, and because I also applied to Swarthmore, which is like the same, except more nerdy and less jocky.

I applied to William and Mary because I needed another safety and Tufts was already taken...by 54 people of my class of 80.

I applied to Middlebury because they have a quidditch team. For reals.

I applied to Dartmouth because they have their own ski mountain. (Ditto with Middlebury.)

I didn't apply to UChicago because of those stupid sweatshirts that have something to do with death and fun... oh right, where fun goes to die.

I didn't apply to Cal state long beach because my brother goes there and I could not stand the anymore people telling me I look like him (obviously since we are siblings!) -_-. But yea that was immature of me. hahaa

I applied for HYP because, well, my rationale at the time was "why not?". This was a full month after I was accepted into my runaway first choice EA...

Didn't apply to UMich after sending scores, etc. there b/c the essays were weird.
Didn't apply to Syracuse b/c I look terrible in orange.
Didn't apply to Penn State b/c the sample dorm room smelled weird.
Applied to U of Pittsburg b/c this hot guy from my school is applying there :) (haha i never sent my ACT scores though)
Applied to Alaska Pacific University so they'd stop sending me stuff (it was free and they didn't require test scores)
Applied to BU because I love the school, and when I visited, there were four super-hot guys running around the track in the gym mmmm ;).
