what courses do freshmen usually take 1st semster? like, a math, a foreign language, a science, a seminar? i heard that p.e. is required. how does that work?

Freshman year is usually

MATH 103, MATH 104 or STAT 101

MGMT 100

ECON 001

Writing Seminar

Language or some other class

Spring:

MATH 104 or STAT 101, or STAT 102

ECON 002

Some core class (OPIM 101, Marketing 101), etc

Language

Other requirement

and if you are in the college and not wharton...

There is no physical education requirement ( I dont think there is one in any of the 4 schools)

What courses you take first semester really depends on your major, history majors I know dove right into history classes, where as science majors were taking 2 science courses first semester, and as I started off as a math major, i was taking 2 math courses. So it depends, but most people take ECON 001 (Introduction to Microeconomics)

I recommend you take a seminar, they usually are pretty cool.

If you don't take a seminar, try a writing class since you should get that req out of the way.

The general requirement for the college is broken down into sectors but generally, you shouldn't worry about filling reqs first semester since no matter what you take, it will probably fulfill something.

The general req is basically 2 society classes (anthro, econ, etc.), 2 history and tradition, 2 arts and letters (english mostly), physical science, some other kind of science (I forget which), quantitative analysis (like a chem lab or something), another science course, 4 semesters of language (but an AP score of 4 satisfies this as does a decent SAT II score), and a writing req. I don't know if I touched on everything but that is basically what it is.
