for math, only anything below an 800. In fact, that happened to me. 770 May 05 --> 800 November 06

It was more of a pride (in math...) thing than worrying about what colleges would think.

So D should retake a 770 on Math IIC she took after the freshman year Hons. pre calc class.
She seems to score 84 percentile. It did not list how many she got wrong.

^What are you on??????? NO WAY!!

if said D wants to major in math/science then ya, and anyway she has two years to retake like I did (we have similar situations), so if she wants that 800 then go for it.

Why is retaking bad? People run 3hr marathons and then enter another marathon (and pay money) just to get a better time. A marathon is a lot harder than a 1 hr multiple choice test. I would imagine that there are some students who wonder "hmm, can I get all 800's?" just for the fun of it. Yes, most people would rather take the money and go skiing, or whatever, but there are those people that just look for a challenge. Just don't do it because you feel like you have to. Above 750? 780? I can't imagine anyone else really cares all that much.

honestly, the admissions officer looking through your application will not care that you "only" got a 770 in Math instead of an 800... the extra 30 points is certainly not going to help anyone get in.

Take a hypothetical example:

Two students have the exact same stats except one has, say, a 770 in math and the other has an 800. They care more about the Essays and EC's than those lousy 30 points.

To OP: I think anything 750+ is not worth retaking, but that's just my opinion; take it how you will.

760... math2c I want an 800 though

I'd retake anything lower than a perfect for a subject test.

depends: if it was Math IIC --> 780
Bio, chem, or US history-->740ish

the thing is for math it really is a bigger difference because of the curve than one would think, but whatever...

probably 700-720 depending on what the topic was

quick question
change subjects=?...does that mean, cause this is basically my situation, if i didnt do as well as i hoped on a subject test that i could just take more and i guess have my highest ones count? like if the school i want to go to only wants 2 and i have 3+?

you are a fool to retake any SAT that is above a 750, seriouslly, most likely, you will get a lower score, especially in a suject that isn't fresh

and at a certain point its for ego, nothing more, but go ahead, risk it if you need to, its your money and your potential to get a lower score

If you really think you're gonna get a lower score then it seems you don't know your material all too well, does it? For something like Math IIC, it's perfectly fine to re-take if you're uber-advanced in math (i.e., taking pre-calc in 9th grade or before). As for the others, I probably do not recommend it because it's not as ingrained as math is for most.

chem 690
math 740
us hist 740

Bump. I like this topic. I'm debating whether a 700 on lit is worth the retake. <<I think I probably will try a couple of more practice tests and see my score.

I'd retake only if it's less than 700.

I would retake anything under 750 for the subject tests. You're aiming to show that you've mastered a subject area, not just that you're better than average in it. That's just me, though (and for the record, I barely slipped by my own retake level with a 760 in US History.)

Another point I think should be considered is that you should retake it if you did not have sufficient time to prep. So over the summer you may have more time to prep, but I agree anything above 750 is not worth retaking it.

After spending time on CC, anything less than a 800 looks bad, especially for Math IIC, with all these people doing so well. But I'd say around 760+, I'd stop.

I am tempted to retake my 770 in Math IIC. it is so frustrating, knowing that math is my best subject and getting this score. I KNOW I can do better, but again I don't want to go through it all again. sigh...
