What's the mistake in the following case?

Here's a sat question:

Quincy took Dan to Derek's home [for a visit], [never imagining] that five years [would pass] before [seeing] Derek again. [No error]

The incorrect part is [seeing]; my question is what is correction for it?

It should be “he saw.” “Seeing” grammatically modifies “years.” Lame, I know.

It should be “Quincy saw” or “Dan saw” because Like Marvin said in the clause, “seeing” refers to five years, which makes no sense and if replace only with “he”, there might be a ambiguity.

Except it should be “he would see” as opposed to “he saw.”
