What's the social/academic life at Fairfield?

I'd like to hear from recent FU students about the social life at Fairfield?
Is the enough of a variety of events to attend? Do kids party during the week or just Thurs/Fri/Sat. Upperclassman- does it get old in the 3rd & 4th year? Is there still plenty of "beach" housing or do they get snatched up quickly?

Are academics rigourous or not too stressful? Where does most of the studying take place?

Thanks!

Is the enough of a variety of events to attend?

I'm In terms of social life at Fairfield I would say there is a decent mix of things to do. Parties at the townhouses are the most popular thing to do on campus for Underclassmen, while the beach and the local bars attract seniors. The student association sponsors trips to NYC (broadway, yankee games, etc), Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun casinos, and other on campus events like concerts, comedians, speakers, etc.

Do kids party during the week or just Thurs/Fri/Sat.?

Tuesday (limited wednesday classes), Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are definitely the most popular nights to go out.

Upperclassman- does it get old in the 3rd & 4th year?

From my experience, I think by the end of my junior year I was tired of townhouse parties, and was looking to get off campus more. However, I didnt turn 21 until the year was over. By senior year when everyone lives at the beach and are all 21 its a totally new experience.

Is there still plenty of "beach" housing or do they get snatched up quickly?

Beach housing is usually available to those who want it (i think like 80% of seniors who apply for off-campus housing get it). They are talking about changing the lottery system to a merit-based system rather than a random lottery, but 9 out of 10 people I knew had no problem getting off campus status and finding a house.

Are academics rigourous or not too stressful? Where does most of the studying take place?

Academics depends on the major. I know the school of engineering is known to be very tough. The business school is mized; finance and accounting majors tend to work harder, while marketing and management majors seem to have it easier. Anything in the Arts & Sciences school is hit or miss depending on major. I can't speak about the nursing school. Overall I think most students work hard and would say the courseload is challenging but fair, and the professor's grading seems to be somewhat favorable. In terms of studying, the library is by far the most popular place to study. The third floor of the library is where you will find a majority of students studying on any given night (even seniors who come back on campus to study).

Hope this helps....

gmoney- thanks for the info! anyone else?

I've lived in Fairfield for seventeen years, and in case you were wondering, the students' relations with the townspeople aren't optimal. The townies generally resent the students and consider them bratty, spoiled nuisances. This negative impression is due largely to the students getting summer houses on a local beach and then partying, loudly, 'til they puke, much to the disdain of their neighbors. However, Fairfield is a gorgeous, safe suburb with multiple beaches and is only an hour away from NYC. I have been to the Quick Center for many theater and dance performances, and it is a beautiful space with many entertaining acts coming through constantly. I hope this helps!
