whats up with ALL the waitlists???

seriously, i heard hotckiss only accepted like 5% of their applicants. did they get so many more applicants?

don't believe everything you hear

what do you mean hockeykid?

I mean I highly doubt Hotchkiss accepted only 5 percent.

And Hotchkiss wait-lists a ton of kids every year, so I don't really think this year is different then any other.

whatever, i just know that more kids applied this year because public schools are getting worse and worse by the second

It'll be interesting to see official stats when they are released by the top schools. Last year, many of the top schools had very high yield rates and over-enrolled. My guess is acceptances are probably lower and waitlists higher because of that. It seems like a lot of schools had record applications once again. I know last year that some schools, SPS for example, posted admissions stats in the acceptance letters. Has anyone seen any official numbers this year?

Also, many schools did not draw from their waitlists at ALL last year!

Hotchkiss stated "over 1500 applicants" with acceptance email.

I really wish I knew how many kids got taken off wait lists every year.

you got in?

my daughter, freshman applicant, was accepted.

she was waitlisted at Exeter. That's killing her...

There you go 1500 applicants 578 students. So we divide 578 by four and we get 145. So I figure they take around 100 kids? 1500 divided by 100 is 15. That means if there yield rate was one hundred percent they would still have a 15 percent acceptance rate. I don't know where you got this 5 percent but we can obviously see its not true.

So we add a couple percent since obviously the yield rate is not 100 percent and we have an average number.

agree with you hockeykid841

Hockey, you need to remember that most of the kids on here are what, 13? And a lot of them have had a really bad start to their week.

Try being a little understanding instead of snarky. 5%, 15%, whatever. It's still very low, isn't it? So it's understandable that many kids feel the waitlists are a bit long this year (ie, why not more rejections, etc).

thank you allidoiswait. im sorry hockeykid, did you apply anywhere?

Actually hockeykid the amount of children aged 13 has decreased. The next increase in children age 13 should occur in about 8-10 years, so kids who are freshman this year in high school should have a little less competition for college spots than high school seniors did last year. So, that should be a little bit of good news for anyone who was waitlisted! ;)
Personally, I think the fact that the news is getting out about secondary schools offering more financial aid is what is causing more people to consider applying to private school.

Middlesex took fewer than 1 in 10.

what do you mean?

less than 10% were accepted.

i think this year will come down to this: if you weren't a genius, super-rich, or had something awesome on your app, it was a hard year to get in ANYwhere.

for those of you who got into schools like andover, hotchkiss, middlesex, tabor, peddie, etc, good job---and for those who didn't, totally don't feel bad! i swear it looks like the admissions officers chatted up a storm this year---i was surprised at the lack of multiple-acceptances. most people only got into one or two schools at best.

well, a lot of rich kids at my school got in, and then people like me, well, 3 waits, 1 reject, 1 accept, and 1 still unknown, so...

See, there you go! you got an acceptance. there are a bunch of kids on this board that would kill to be in your position. :) It may not be your first choice, but it's a top-class BS in New England. You're luckier than 99% of the kids in the country, much less the world.

You guys have all gotta think positive!
