What's up with McDaniel College?

I was recently looking through data from the US Department of Education that is posted on the Chronicle of Higher Education's website about freshmen demographics. I noticed that in 2010 95% of the freshman class came from Maryland. The average for the previous 10-15 years was in the low to mid 60% range.

Do any of you Maryland parents know why McDaniel suddenly began bringing in so many more local students? I'm curious because my daughter liked what she saw at McDaniel (she was accepted but chose to attend her reach school).

Hmmm. That’s interesting. I live 15 miles from Westminster and - in these parts - McDaniel isn’t considered a “Maryland” school. In fact, I’d be willing to bet it’s relatively unknown outside the Baltimore suburbs.

I’ve got to wonder if the 95% figure is a typo. 5% out of Maryland would only be 20 students, right? That just can’t be correct.

I was wondering if it was a clerical error also. Since the figure the CHE actually uses is 94.9% I don’t think it is just a typo. Anyway, here is the link:

Am I misreading something?

The College Navigator Data says 90% in-state. [College Navigator - McDaniel College](<a href=“College Navigator - McDaniel College”>College Navigator - McDaniel College)

I just called the Adminssions office. Spoke to Fornia/Frenea(??). She checked her data and told me that for the class that entered in Fall 2010 there were 235 from Maryland and 215 from elsewhere.

I told her what the Chronicle is reporting and suggested McDaniel’s Media Relations dept seek a correction. I also asked if they have a CDS online and she said just some of the data, not all.

You’ve gone above and beyond DougBetsy. I got the impression during the admissions process with my daughter that McDaniel was not the most tech savvy place on her list. For example, while all of the other colleges that she applied to received her ACT scores electronically, we had to wait for weeks for an EA response from McDaniel because they could only accept the scores hard copy by snail mail. The lack of CDS info online kind of bugged me too.

They don’t accept electronic scores? Wow. I get irritated about lack of a CDS but there are many schools in that boat.

I don’t know anything about McDaniel, but I can say that one of the big costs to colleges nowadays is IT support (across campus, to students, faculty, and offices).

They definitely accept SAT scores electronically. They were very quick with an EA decision for my son.
