What's your allowance?

Getting money whenever you want is an allowance, whether you want to address it as such or not. And kids at my school don’t get that. Almost everyone in my class of 180 has a job.

And maybe detrimental wasn’t the best word. But there is nothing beneficial about an allowance. Learning to “budget” with $20 a week isn’t exactly budgeting, since, as adolescents, we rarely pay for the necessities like food, utilities, clothes, etc. You may “budget” the things you want, but that’s not budgeting. That’s just saving up to buy the next big thing.

My parents allow me a ~$100 debit card for gas only since most of the driving I do is for them anyway, but otherwise I don’t get an allowance.

What little money I have I got from reffing soccer, working odd jobs through a temp. agency, and doing yard work for neighbors. Also, gift money.

lol @ complaining about a brand new ford focus.

^ this.

“My car” which is really my parents’ car is 7 years old and has 115,000 miles on it.

So is mine! But seriously, I have * such * an amazing car. It’s seven years old as well, and it generally runs well - I’ve only had to pay about $500 in maintenance and repair costs in the year that I’ve had it. Gas mileage is ehh but that’s why I work obvs. I’m just so grateful to have a car I can’t imagine wanting a “better” one. To each his/her own, I suppose.

For me when it comes to cars, there’s only two things I really care about…

It can get me from Point A to Point B reliably

Decent gas mileage

I’m really not too picky. Most kids at my super rich high school have pretty nice cars, so I’m probably the odd one out.

I couldn’t agree more. I guess I should probably care more but I don’t. It gets me where I want to go, and 26 mpg isn’t bad at all.

I get around $7.50 per hour. It’s usually $15-20 per day. My boat cost $1500 but I had been saving up for it for a while and used Christmas/birthday money, as well as my babysitting money. The club fee is $160 per year for my spot. A lot of regattas end up having free registration if the skipper is under 18, which I am. But junior regattas can cost sometimes over $200 for registration, dinner, etc.

I don’t think I get that much money for babysitting, but it pays for almost everything I need. I don’t get paid for babysitting my brother though, which can get annoying.

Not old enough to work legally right now but I probably will have to get a job later on.

Yeah, I never understood getting paid to do chores. My brother and I split the dishes every night and do our own laundry/vaccum etc.

On the other hand, if I need a bus fare for an academic thing, my parents will pay. Same as buying textbooks.
