What's your allowance?

I worked at the piano studio where I took lessons. I was by far the youngest teacher, but it was okay because I mostly worked with 4-5 year olds. It kind of sucked because it was under the table so they paid me less than minimum wage. After a year of that I started teaching lessons privately. I make much more that way. Going back, I definitely would have started that way instead of spending a year being a wage slave.

This isn’t meant to seem rude, but it’s kind of ridiculous to be in high school and get an allowance. I stopped getting an allowance when I turned ten. I used to mow my lawn for twenty bucks a week, but that’s a job more than an allowance.

But being in high school has so many opportunities for making money, obviously like jobs. Heck, you can sell drugs if you want to make money.

I have a job where I make like $130 a week. It’s nice but I hate the job itself.

Well, being a ‘wage slave’ gets you something far more valuable: experience.

I felt like an idiot when I was applying to jobs this year (at places like supermarkets, etc.) because I had never had a formal job. So now i’m working a summer job at the swimming hole, it’s not glamorous and it’s not the best-paying job but I at least have experience (and I actually really like my job, even though I don’t like cleaning bathrooms). So maybe i’ll have another go at it later on with a ‘real job’ under my belt.

44: Well had you consider the fact that maybe people can’t find a job. Also some people don’t even want one due to other issue.

Drugs? This is Cc…
Well besides most of us don’t even get an allowance anyway, we just get lunch money and ask for “spending” money from our parents.

We barely have enough money to make ends meet, so I definitely don’t get an allowance. I think the whole concept is dumb, anyway. It’s like getting paid for good grades.

You seriously think working for 5 bucks an hour is a more valuable experience than running your own business and making 5 times that? No thanks. But yeah, in addition to teaching 5-6 piano lessons weekly, I remain a wage slave at a local tutoring company and have an awesome paying internship. Believe me, I know how to be an employee.

I think this is even worse than allowance. You just get free money whenever you want it? At least with an allowance kids manage a set amount of money…

Lol sometimes I use my lunch money for spending money.

Yes, because how do you learn to run a business without knowing what the rest of the business is all about?

Same goes for anything, really. In JROTC, when I finally became senior staff and later now deputy/group commander, it’s a hell of a lot different than being an NCO or any other lowly job, but working said jobs helped me because I knew how they had to get done, and my job is to make sure **** gets done. How do you know how something is supposed to be done if you’ve never…done it?

But yo, that’s just my $.02.

I don’t get an allowance. I make money from babysitting, Fiverr, and eBay. I have to mow the lawn every week, do my own laundry, clean the kitchen most nights, etc. I pay for movies, my boat, yacht club membership, assorted regatta fees, & other expenses associated with my sailing team, food when I’m not at home/with the family, carnivals, mall trips, basically every time I’m not with my family. I’m glad my mom doesn’t give me money. It teaches me that if I want to go out with my friends, I have to babysit a few hours. I can’t just ask for it.

^efeens well yeah, but I’m not going to NOT accept cash!

None… Only spoiled kids get allowances for doing their job as a member of their family… ;)

I don’t get allowance either.

Obviously I had taken lessons for years so I knew how to give a piano lesson.

I thought more people would have allowances to! i’ve always had an allowance that goes up a dollar each birthday. as of now, i get $16 a week. i am going to try and get a job this school year though. i have to clean the entire kitchen and the dishwasher in the mornings two times a week, (that isn’t much, but works out well because of my other two siblings) as will as various other little things that my dad might want him to do now again. all he has to do is threaten me with no allowance, and i literally will do whatever job he wants haha. it goes quite quickly though because i have to buy all my own makeup and books for pleasure reading, and i read a lot. Thinking about it, if i bought some good high quality hair mousse and mascara, that would be my weekly allowance gone. it goes a lot quicker than you would think! Although, if i beg hard enough my mom usually gives me money for the movies and eating out, and about twice a year takes me shopping for some clothes for the new season (winter/summer clothes), and then i get random things in between then. i guess i am more privileged than most people, but it doesn’t feel that way! where i live, kids drive brand new mercedes and audi’s to school. and then theres me in my brand new ford focus, still feeling out of place.

56: I want your life… just because you mention Audi.

You must get rather a lot of money for babysitting if you can pay for boats, race costs, club fees etc

Would anyone be able to tell me how to quote? I found the box/button thing but it won’t check. I’m an old person in terms of technology.

I dont get an allowance but will probably get a job in December when I get my license. Im starting a mini business though in a few weeks

Getting an allowance is entirely detrimental. If you get an allowance throughout high school, or just money whenever you want, you’ll be in for a sore surprise when you actually have to pay for your own stuff. I hate that my parents won’t buy me literally anything (the most expensive thing they’ve ever bought me, for my pleasure and nothing else, was a GameCube when I turned 9), but I also appreciate it. The experience helps to sort of allow me to understand what needs to be done in the future.

I’ve also never heard of a high school student getting an allowance. And I go to a relatively wealthy private school…

^ The wealthier the school, the more likely kids are just going to get given money when they need/want/ask for it.
My parents want me to be able to budget, and understand that I can’t just buy whatever I want, so I get an allowance. I fail to see how this is detrimental.

@UKgirl you would do it like this:
[ quote ]Would anyone be able to tell me how to quote? I found the box/button thing but it won’t check. I’m an old person in terms of technology.[ /quote ]

just take away the spaces outside the square brackets
