Whats Your Verdict: A Fat or Thin Envelope(3 years from now)

Hey College Confidential people! Im an Indian male residing in India (in the 9th grade - entered it 5 months ago) and am currently doin the the IGCSE curriculam. I just wanted to know whether Im on the right track for the colleges of my dreams (Stanford, MIT, Columbia etc). Before I continue, I would just like to highlight the fact that in places like India, oppurtunities are at their minimum - it is very tough to find enabling places, good facilities etc. (unlike in the US). Quality instruction is very tough to find and it is tough to pursue what you like. However, I have grabbed whatever oppurtunities that have come my way. Note: I have lived in NY for 3 years but that was when I was small (1st - 3rd grade).

A bit about myself: - I am a playful and carefree person who knows how to play hard. In fact, I find it kinda tough to sit at my desk and study - Im always looking for a good game of sports. However, whoever has met me has said that I am extremely, extremely bright. My teachers tell me that If I just spend a good 2 hours with my books - Ill surely be valedictorion. Anyway, heres what i got so far- please be as critical, honest and harsh as you like.

ACADEMICS: Our school doesnt rank or have a GPA system - but I would probably put myself in the top 5 of my class. I have taken the toughest courseload offered in the 9th - 10 classes (tough courses including additional mathematics). My school is an EXTREMELY competitive school (probably the best in the nation) and is well respected by colleges like Yale and Stanford. I have recieved some subject awards in the eight grade and have been selected for inter house quiz twice if that helps. :-)

EC’S - Throughout my life my main passion has been chess so far and i have stuck with it for some time now. (although it has been at a standstill due to my upcoming mid term semester examinations).

Well thats it - I AM REALLY SORRY FOR POSTING SUCH A LONG THREAD, this is my first time posting. Thanks for the advice in advance should you give any :-)

cmon - 10 views and no comments. please give ur opinion

At this point, you have excellent ECs. I still think you have to wait two years to get a definite idea of how you stand (especially with test scores), but you seem to be a standout applicant. Just keep up the grades and gain some leadership positions as you progress in high school and you should have a fairly good chance at the colleges listed.

thanks alot! I really appreciated that piece of advice :-). anyone else willing to proffer their opinion?

oh yea btw - skp. If you read the first few paragraphs - there arent many oppurtunities where Im stayin, Im kinda worried about that. do colleges know about these problems?

My advice: You are a FRESHMAN!!

Do NOT ask for chances until at the earliest Spring of Junior year! This is ridiculously early!

I know its kinda early - but im not asking for my chances. If you read the first paragraph - i wanted to know whether Im on the right track. (to being admitted)

It's still to early to gauge to that. Your eye can't be on the prize this early in the game. One day at a time. One day at a time.

Well, without knowing a cumulative GPA or SAT (or even PSAT) scores, it's hard to say for sure. Your ECs are definitely on track, though there's still academics, work/volunteer/internship experience, recs, and other things to take into consideration. Wait a couple of years and you'll get more answers!
