Wheaton V. Calvin - philosophy

Between wheaton in Illinois and Calvin in Michigan, does anyone know who has the better philosophy department? Both have the majority of faculty from highly-ranked graduate programs in philosophy. The main difference as far as I can tell is that Calvin is larger. Does anyone have experience at either one of these colleges? Thanks.

Wow! It is a relief to see these colleges listed. I can't help you on the whole philosophy thing, but I know a little about both schools since most of my school goes to Calvin upon graduation and some go to Wheaton(Wheaton is a little more prestigous and selective than Calvin). I have persononally talked to a Philosophy major at Calvin and he really liked their program, however, I can't compare them for you. Just thought I would comment because I know these schools and rarely see them on CC.

Calvin's program is excellent. Did Alvin Platinga not attend?

Brownorbust - Thanks for the comments, I've narrowed it down to these two schools, and overall I like wheaton better, but I have a feeling calvin's philosophy program is better.

nspeds - Alvin plantinga left harvard to attend calvin (as a matter of fact I was just reading his online autobiography). He used to be a professor there, but is now teaching at notre dame. I think his son also teaches computer science there (calvin), which I may either minor in or double major in.

Just some advice I want to offer:
- I have spent some time at Wheaton and alot of time at Calvin(as I live a half hour away) just chilling, and would say that Calvin offers much more to do and overall is a more exciting campus
- Merit Aid is much better at Calvin, whereas at Wheaton they divide it amongst all of the students.

But best of luck at either of these great schools!

The Calvin student body and faculty also tend to be a little less conservative than Wheaton's.

Yeah, I've heard that too. Calvin had like 1/3 of their faculty sign a protest against some of the presidents actions when he visited their campus.

I get that vibe too. Wheaton is through and through all about their mission statement - "for Christ and His Kingdom" or something along those lines. Calvin seems to be less focused in this regard, from what I hear. I have no direct experience with Calvin. And yes, it is SO refreshing to hear these two schools mentioned.
