Son has an LOA and needs a waiver for eyesight. Everything else is a go, except waiting for nomination. Does anyone know when USNA reviews for medical waiver? Will a medical waiver ever be granted before the nomination is secured?

Would love to see response to this question, too. Our son has received LOA, nominations, etc and has received medical waivers and offers from the Merchant Marines Academy and ROTC program at Vanderbilt University. These waivers were granted the end of last week-any idea on how long it might take for Naval Academy to act on this? USNA is his top choice...
Thank you for your help!

Hey nickinwest, congrats on Vandy! Has your son been accepted there yet or are you waiting to hear from them, as well?

waivers come as late as mid-March....

if you have an LOA and a nomination in hand, and grades remain good and you are "waiverable" for USNA, I would not be too worried at this point.... while nothing is a guarentee, LOA's are not given out to anyone the USNA is not interested in!

I agree with Navy 2010 that it is a good sign that your sign has a LOA. Unfortunately, with our experience,USNA is not very speedy with the waiver. My son received a LOA and a Nomination last January and did not receive the waiver until mid March. It is a very trying process. Hang in there. I wish your son the best of luck.

Is the later response on the waivers for any particular reason? Do they try to get them all "together" toward the application "season's" end before they appoint? Any insight?

USNA Admissions puts all waiverable folk into a pool that they then look at and determine who they want to grant waivers to. Looking at all who made up the class of 2010 with waivers of ALL kinds - don't think you can divine this process any easier than the Admissions process in general. It just seems USNA is on the slow curve compared to other Academies for things like this. If your application is strong and you have an LOA - it is a positive sign that you are a wanted candidate. As hard as it sounds - hanging in there - possibly talking to your BGO for support, and staying focused on a strong finish for senior year of high school is what one has to do right now.

Thank you for the information. This is my first time posting so forgive me if I do not follow protocol. My daughter has a Conditional Acceptance Letter (I assume this is the same as the LOA) but she has to get a medical waiver for her eyesight. We got the letter the first part of Feb but have heard nothing since. The blue and gold officer has been great but he said there is really nothing he can tell us about the waiver process. You say it is a good sign that she got the letter but she and I are very anxious about the appointment. How long does it usually take? We have called the Naval Academy and they simply tell us her waiver is in the process. We have also called DODMERB but they said their part is complete and it is now in the hands of the Naval Academy. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I hope you mis-stated your son's situation. If he did not receive a NOMINATION from a Member of Congress, or other source, I believe that he is probably out of luck.

If, on the other hand, he is waiting for an APPOINTMENT, I wish you both well as he awaits the outcome.

hippo1,

There are a lot of us playing the waiting game. I sent you the web address to a site that is very informative and helpful to us. Check your private messages.

Can anyone explain hippo's "Conditional Acceptance Letter". I'm not familiar with that one.

A conditional acceptance letter is an LOA. just another, nicer name for it. 'conditional' because the official acceptance is waiting on a certain condition (ie. nomination, waiver, etc.) to be met.

hippo- I was in the same situation back in early Feb also! just wait it out..if the medical status on the DoDMERB website says 'WAIVERABLE' with the vision, I would not worry about getting the waiver (b/c i heard there is no longer a cap on the # of vision waivers that are given out). As for the nomination, if he still doesn't have one at this point...i'm not sure if more will be given out.
gluck with everything

OOH!!!!! I had a waiver mess for USMA 2010 with an LOA. Be careful! I had gotten one waiver in March from a test in August, and even then they added more remedial tests. The tests were completed in May and given to me in mid april after the deadline. The waivers for those tests did not arrive until October 2006.

They don't tell you if you have additional exams. Just to warn you. Be careful.

Waivers are given out on a rolling basis. I talked to a few people who got there's last semester. I got mine in January. My friend didn't get his until April. These were all vision waivers by the way. There's still hope. :)

Lack of nom was due to an "error" on our MOC's part. Nom was promised to occur anyway IF son received a waiver and appmt. Well, we just got the final communication last Thursday. Vision waiver denied (7.0 & 7.75 dia). Son had provided info to demonstrate that vision was stabilized but to no avail. Huge disappointment -son had a LOA and USNA was first choice. But, he has appmt to KP and is all ready to go there and then Navy after graduation from KP.

USNA is very stingy on visual acuity waivers unfortunately. I'm very sorry to hear about that. I don't know why the MOC didn't nominate to begin with, I'm surprised.

phi1313: sorry to hear about USNA, but congratulations on Kings Point.... it is no small accomplishment by any means! Make sure to contact the official USMMA welcoming committee, chaired by Jamzmom....anything you ever wanted to know about USMMA she will be able to tell you - and then some!!!

Best of luck!

ellwemzer-
The DODMERB site does not say "waiverable" just "pending waiver submission/review" but the BGO says it is waiverable. The DODMERB site has not changed since the beginning of the process, but for this site, I understand that is not uncommon.
Thanks for the advice and encouragement. And, yes, there is still hope. Lot's of it. She has been accepted to the Colorado School of Mines but USNA is first choice and USMA is second, so we will just have to wait it out.
Thanks everybody!
